U.S. coronavirus deaths exceed 75,000: Reuters tally

(Reuters) - U.S. deaths from the novel coronavirus topped 75,000 deaths on Thursday, according to a Reuters tally, after the White House shelved a step-by-step guide prepared by health officials to help states safely reopen.

 

Deaths in the United States, the epicenter of the global pandemic, have averaged 2,000 a day since mid-April despite efforts to slow the outbreak.

The death toll is higher than any fatalities from the seasonal flu going back to 1967 and represents more U.S. deaths than during the first 10 years of the AIDS epidemic, from 1981 to 1991.

 

U.S. cases are over 1.25 million as new infections continue to rise in many states, including Illinois, Maryland, Minnesota, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and Wisconsin, according to a Reuters tally and an analysis of historical data from the COVID Tracking Project. New York and New Jersey, the two states with the highest number of cases, have been experiencing declines in new positive cases in recent weeks.

 

Some health experts are predicting a resurgence in deaths later this summer as U.S. states lift stay-at-home orders and Americans begin eating out at restaurants and going to gyms again.

 

The White House shelved a step-by-step guide prepared by U.S. health officials to help states safely reopen mass transit and businesses closed by the coronavirus pandemic, an administration official said on Thursday. This report produced by Chris Dignam.

 

A University of Washington research model https://covid19.healthdata.org/united-states-of-america often cited by White House officials earlier this week nearly doubled its projected U.S. death toll to over 134,000 by Aug. 4.

 

An internal Trump administration forecast predicted a surge in fatalities to 3,000 a day by the end of May.

 

States are eager to reopen due to surging unemployment rates. About 33.5 million people have filed claims for unemployment benefits since March 21, roughly 22.1% of the working-age population.

 

A 17-page document prepared by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention was shelved to avoid giving "overly prescriptive" guidance, said a member of President Donald Trump's White House task force.

I defy any Trump backer, or anyone, to explain to me how this is a good move.

I don't hold Trump entirely responsible for the 75k dead Americans. Perhaps 58,000, equal to number killed in Vietnam war.

   75,000 deaths and Trump keeps moving the goal posts.  First he said relax there would only be a few deaths.  Oops.   Then said 50,000 deaths would show he's doing a great job.  Then when that total was reached he moved it to 60,000 and now I think he's wised up and says 200,000 dead will be a good outcome for his job handling things.  Meanwhile he outrageously lies that the US has done more testing than the rest of the world combined--while also managing to badly bully a poor nurse--during Nurse Appreciation Week, no less-- who had dared to mention the shortages of PPE.  Just a disgusting human being.

With Boris getting the virus, I wonder how many more people around

Trump and Pence get the virus before they do. Just a matter of time?

  WIth so many people getting the virus daily and still not really trying

to social distance, or stay home as much as they can, I think that

America will have thousands more get the virus. I watch the CBS ABC and PBS news

channels and am so glad that I live where I do. I hope that Canada keeps the

border closed for a few months.

Laughable that the partisans in this thread blame Trump for New York's abject failure at managing Coronavirus. 

 

Its becoming clearer by the day at how the state fails to manage its resources putting people in harms way, accounting for a massive portion of overall US deaths.

New York wasn't responsible for letting virus carriers into the country.

 

New York wasn't responsible for a National Stockpile of medical equipment that was totally inadequate and had a lot of non-working or out of date supplies.

 

New York wasn't responsible for the U.S. having, and still having, a national shortage of PPE and other equipment, leaving health care workers and first responders exposed to the virus, with many becoming sick as a result.

 

New York State wasn't responsible for the U.S. failing in the early going to develop and deploy a diagnostic test for CV that would have allowed earlier detection of just where the virus was present.

 

New York State wasn't responsible for telling the American people that the virus was nothing to worry about and everything was under control....then later promoting quack/false cures and medicines.

 

I could go on.... but I'm not going to spend the next 24 hours completing the list of all the things NY wasn't responsible for ... but Trump and the federal government were.

???? Nobody that needed a ventilator was unable to get one. A separate issue that has nothing to do with the states infection and death rate.
