The chief of the Kaeng Krachan national park in Phetchaburi gave details of the death of a man who was trampled by a wild elephant last night.

The incident happened in a durian and mango orchard.

Mana Phermphoon said that the elephant had stamped on 57 year old Pornthep who died later in Hua Hin Hospital.

The area was outside the national park in a place that was not fully fenced off to prevent elephant movement.

Evidence showed that the elephant had tried to shake a mango tree, one of many that encircled the durian trees that contained 1,500 fruit ripening for market.

Pornthep's wife said that her husband had tried to scare off the elephant with firecrackers.

Mana said it was dark and there were lots of trees and the elephant was spooked.

He said that the deceased used to help out as an elephant control volunteer in the national park.
