Tourism sector will only start recovering next year, say experts

Recommended Posts

Apparently the Thai PM has announced that the 1st July date to totally reopen won't be happening.

Not a surprise but the government seem to be beginning to adopt a total siege mentality.

No infections in, no infections out.

Lovely sound bite. Totally unrealistic.

The rest of the world, including parts of Asia are opening up, is Thailand really going to keep this up?

Tourism sector will only recover in 20xx?

The geniuses have come up with their new plan including the buzz words 'travel corridors'.

Country by country basis. Bung by bung basis.

No agreements yet, but they only want nice clean countries.

Meanwhile, on another thread their raising money for food kitchens to feed Thai citizens.

You couldn't make it up.

Are you suggesting tourists from Brazil, for example,  should be allowed into Thailand?

Over 1200 deaths in the last 24 hours.  Over 29,000 new reported cases, and over 500,000 cases nationally, and they haven't hit the peak yet.

First one on Google.

What possible case could you put forward for allowing Brazilian tourists into Thailand?

The simple answer should be, ZERO, for now.  Yet some on this forum are calling for Thailand to open up the boarders to everyone.

Who cares what they want it's what the government in Thailand want that counts and the government of the tourists home country want. The UK is going to start two week mandatory isolation next week how that's going to work is anybody's guess.

Here in the Netherlands and in the UK by the looks of it the people have decided that lock down is over and are swarming in such massive numbers that it's impossible to police that might be enough to persuade governments not to allow flights from the UK to land.

Maybe letting a few of the female variety in would be acceptable, just for testing sake and all.

The people of certain countries may congregate in defiance of the law, and in protest, but citizens of those countries will not be going on a holiday abroad for a long time.  Other countries will not be accepting them.

What on earth.

I'd say figuring out when you will open the country to tourists first would probably be wise to know before predicting this.

Let's hope the lust for a baht here does not override scientific and medical advice on when it is appropriate to do so.

But what I really don't understand is why Thailand is unlikely to allow any foreigners to enter the country for the rest of this year. Iceland plans to reopen foreign tourism next month by requiring all arrivals to either pay for a Covid test right after landing, or pay for 14-day quarantine. Why can't Thailand do that?

Most foreigners visit Thailand for 7-14 days. No one with IQs above 14 will spend their entire 14day vacation  in a hotel room to obey the 14-day quarantine rule and fly back to their country on the 15th day

If they were tested straight after landing, perhaps they could enjoy a 2 week holiday here.  Their home country would also need to test upon landing, or there could be a 2 week quarantine after their 2 week holiday, which would still not be worth it.

then again, in case of a false negative, a second test would be needed within a few days which will further complicate housing these passengers near  airports.

I really don't think a testing regime for tourism is possible for a country like Thailand.

I think Thailand will have to be reasonably clear of the virus for a length of time, then negotiate with countries that are also reasonably clear, and then both countries allow a travel bubble, so international travel can resume.

If Thailand just open the boarders to anyone, people from countries that are reasonably clear that come to Thailand for a 2 week holiday will have to do 2 weeks quarantine at their own expense when they return, so it's not worth it for them to holiday here, so they don't come.

Thailand may find itself in a position that if it accepts tourists from one country, another country may impose quarantine on returning citizens, because Thailand accepts tourism from that country.  This would effect the tourist numbers from the country that saw Thailand as safe, but not the other country that Thailand deemed as safe.

The whole thing is a mess, and isn't going to resolve itself anytime soon.

i agree..it will be extremely complicated to travel anywhere in the world for a classic 10-15day vacation in the foreseeable future with no vaccine so far, unreliable tests and masks, asymptomatic masses and economic uncertainty.

Yes, not to mention, the consequences of any second wave outbreaks.

Many businesses here are going to have to survive on the expat clientele, and domestic tourism, for quite sometime, and they are not lucrative markets.

Most won't. If a business owner has a route out of this mess and Thailand does not open for Q4 and high season, then it will be a stampede to get out of Pattaya.

A vaccine is not even guaranteed, let alone the length of time it will take to approve and distribute.

Many European countries are lifting quarantine requirements. The UK will lift it's ludicrous quarantine by the end of the month.

When will people and governments realise that the idea you can close borders until a vaccine is found is economic madness.

Thailand can open tomorrow, but that doesn't mean any tourists will be coming here, certainly not in the numbers that make businesses viable here.

I don't think there will be a stampede to get out of Pattaya, perhaps a stampede to leave businesses.  However, if a business owner was to owe money to different entities, mainly a Thai landlord, then some of these business owners may go on the run.

I agree with your comments about a vaccine.  It may not materialize for months and months, if at all.  I would not be placing any hope on a vaccine.

As far as opening the boarders, Thailand's only hope, for the short to medium term, is to negotiate travel bubbles with Covid clear countries, however, those countries will only negotiate with Thailand, when Thailand is clear, or near to it.  Hence the strict lock downs.

Not only does Thailand need to appear to be clear of Covid to the world, but it has to prove it's clear of Covid, so other countries will allow their citizens to travel here without forced quarantining when they go home after their holiday.

I hope he has a mandatory hygiene program, which encompasses all Thais and foreigners ,especially incoming foreigners. Quarantine all incoming .Show them how to be clean!

I'm fed up with the germ and virus spreaders, especially the ones that don't cover up their  coughs and sneezing!
