Koh Samui, Thailand’s second largest island, lies in the Gulf of Thailand off the east coast of the Kra Isthmus. It's known for its palm-fringed beaches, coconut groves and dense, mountainous rainforest, plus luxury resorts and posh spas.

 

The landmark 12m-tall golden Big Buddha statue at Wat Phra Yai Temple is located on a tiny island connected to Ko Samui by a causeway.

Things to do:

 

1. Superb Beaches

Let’s start by stating the obvious. The beaches on Koh Samui are world class. The most popular beaches on Koh Samui are:

2. Paradise Park

A Mountain top park featuring a pool with panoramic views, a cafe and animals, including colored pigeons.

 

The fun is also in getting to the park up the steep twisting turn roads, plus the views across Samui are simply stunning.

 

3. Dining

We had to put dining high up the list as there are so many quality places to eat in Samui. Whether you are after the chilled vibes found at Nikki Beach Club, Italian five-star dining at Dr. Frogs bar and Grill, or – well – whatever your taste fancies, Samui has it all. 

 

The Chaweng stretch in Samui is rich in dining choices – you are spoiled for selection. Pub grub, burgers, Mexican, Thai, pizza – it is all there to enjoy.

 

4. Chaweng Boxing Stadium

At least 2 or 3 times a week this stadium boasts a packed Muay Thai fight card, and the fighters are not just Thais! When on vacation in Samui, watching a Muay Thai fight just feels like the right thing to do! 

 

5. Visit Nearby Islands

The most local island is the least explored by tourists and is called Koh Tan. There are lots of tour operators who will take you there, such as Tour Explore.

6. Waterfalls

There are a dozen waterfalls on Samui, some easy to get too whilst others require a bit more of a trek. 

 

The best time to visit waterfalls are in the wetter months of September through November, when the waterfalls are in their full flowing glory. Na Muang is a popular place for families to relax and swim.

7. Nightlife

There is a good nightlife on Samui with Chaweng the hub for most of the activity. Ark Bar in Chaweng is popular with a younger crowd.
