CHIANG MAI (NNT) - The Deputy Prime Minister, Gen. Prawit Wongsuwan, together with people from various sectors, have planted ironwood trees to help restore fire-ravaged forests in the northern province of Chiang Mai.

At Doi Suthep forest area in Chiang Mai’s Mae Rim district, Gen. Prawit today launched a project to encourage Thai people to contribute to forest restoration by planting trees and increasing green spaces.

More than 300 people as well as representatives of government agencies and private firms participated in the event by planting ironwood trees in all 25 districts of Chiang Mai at the same time. Seedlings were distributed to heads of government agencies to help restore forest areas.

The Deputy Prime Minister said the tree growing activity aims to encourage everyone to help conserve forest resources and support all sectors in jointly restoring forest areas damaged by wildfires earlier this year.

Sure re-planting / re-generating forests is important and valuabele,

But I wonder why this gets a big ceremony when there's still much serious work needed to stop fires and therefore prevent serious health risks to kids and the elderly and all citizens?

Thought they were going to build some luxury homes for entitled civil servants.

Just Ironwood trees?  There are no other trees in Thai forests?  What is the Thai translation for "bio diversity".   Its a step forward from condos.

The guy in the background to the right looks like he's about to sh!t himself. Or is that Prayut sneaking up on him with a GT200 in his hand?

That would make a change, on 1 of Prawits visits to Issan, it was him who s++t himself.

Having a guy like Prawit as the representative for this project, is akin to using Justin Bieber to promote the new JPL facility. It would be like asking Trump to head a science forum, or inviting Kim or Putin to head a forum on human rights, or press freedom. What is truly astonishing is that he is still around, and considered useful on any level. Safe to say, generals rarely ever get demoted here.

Prawatch is certainly getting his priorities right - when the country is in turmoil he goes planting trees.
Or, does he eventually evaluate, where in protected zones one could build the next dozens of villas for overworked judges or army executives?
