A former winner of the Miss Thailand beauty pageant has been named by PM Prayut Chan-ocha as the new spokeswoman face for Covid-19 news.

Dr Panprapa Yongtrakul will present the latest news on the coronavirus pandemic at weekends.

Panprapa, also known by her nickname as doctor Bum, runs a beauty clinic under her real name and used to present Channel 9's royal news.

She won the Miss Thailand title in 2008 when she was also named as Miss Healthy and a contestant with beautiful skin.

Recently she has been an advisor to health minister Anutin Charnvirakul.

She married in 2017.

She is a graduate of Chulalongkorn University faculty of medicine.

That nickname is pronounced more like "Bam" than "Bum" by Thais .....

Okey! You´re sure it´s not "Bom"? That would be a disaster for people with speaking disorder "Dr B...B...B..Bom...Bom...."

Dr. Bum and former Miss Thailand. Yep, can´t be more funny. Here we can clearly see what is needed for Thai people to get interested. A funny nickname and a face that is considered beautiful. Not at all the information and the message. Hilarious!

Dr. Bum, we need to see pics of your bum to see if you are qualified to be called Dr. Bum. Do you have a nice big round juicy bum?

Well she isn't no Dr.

She has a bachelors degree from Chulalongkorn university and is referred to as a "female doctor" (pho - yoo).

I suggest they change this mishap "bum" to her original first name Phanprapha.

Is she a doctor like I am a retired special forces operative living in Pattaya?

She graduated from CU medical school.

I doubt you've passed out at any military academy - unless booze was involved 555! ????

You are talking about the doctor, but you are at the same time quoting me???? You get me very confused here??? Do you want to see my bum or the doctors?

It is likely that the reason she spells her nickname as Bum (pronounced Boom บุ๋ม)  is to differentiate herself from another doctor, Pannada Wongphudee (PhD in Business Administration) whose nickname is Boom. Dr. Pannada is also a former Miss Thailand from 2000.

I guess Mr Auntin has had some say in her new role. Maybe more.

The PM is the one who makes appointments to that particular job???   Not like he doesn't have anything better or more important to do with his time?

Thai Rath has some photos of her outside the COVID role here:

Along with this Google Translate excerpt from their article:

For the history of Dr. Pantapong Yongtrakul or Doctor Bum, now aged 33 years, is known as a beautiful, fully equipped woman with a crown from the Miss Thai stage of 2008, guaranteed by the Faculty of Medicine. Chulalongkorn University

Dr. Bum entered the wedding door in 2017 and also owns Panprapa Clinic, a full-service aesthetic clinic.

Stupid nickname comments aside, She runs a Beauty Clinic!!! Isn't there anyone somewhat more qualified in public health, maybe a doctor that would ACTUALLY treat Wuhan Virus patients, available for this position? Thailand just continues to step in dog-poo every chance it gets.

Heck they could get a qualified physician to give updates and put a Pretty in a bikini on the stage as well if this is what Anutin wants.

But I guess we'll get more restrictions based on junk science and who the heck knows what else. Thailand is a laughing stock at this point, while Vietnam has taken the crisis seriously and now is back to full normal again. This while Vietnam's medical system is maybe 20 years behind Thailand. They do have far fewer beauty clinics and weight loss centers - probably because the women are naturally pretty.

There's no pleasing some people.

rather than getting a scientist with the relevant qualifications and experience as an advisor get someone who runs a health clinic.... and the most important thing seems to be her looks. though with only 56 virus deaths compared to the uk's 30,000 plus (countries with similar sized population) not sure how much advice is needed as things are going extremely well.
