What to do in Trang

 

Located in southern Thailand, Trang is home to spectacular limestone cliffs, with white sandy beaches forming its magnificent coastline along the Andaman Sea. 

 

While there is a tourism industry in Trang, it hasn’t yet hit the heights of nearby Krabi and Phuket. And that is no bad thing. Trang offers every bit the natural beauty of neighbouring Krabi, without anywhere close to the crowds of Phuket. 

 

Most people who visit Trang head off to one of its nearby islands, namely: Koh Mook, Koh Ngai, Koh Libong and Koh Kradan. The islands in the province are somewhat hidden jewels that haven’t yet experienced the mass tourism of many of Thailand’s other island destinations.

 

Trang city itself is also worth visiting, if only to sample some of the province’s unique cuisine.

Things to do:
 

1. Koh Mook

 

Koh Mook is part of the Had Chao Mai National Park and is located just 9 kilometres off the mainland. The island’s west coast is mountainous with high cliffs and a rocky coastline whereas the east has a flat plain with swathes of white sandy beaches including the spectacular cape at Hua Laem Beach.

 

The island is the third largest in the Trang Sea, yet is small enough to easily get around on a motorbike, bicycle and also on foot. Koh Mook is home to the spectacular Morakot Cave also known as Emerald Cave, a must-see attraction on the west coast of the island.

 

2. Koh Kradan

 

Part of the Hat Chao Mai Marine National Park, Koh Kradan is located 10km off the coast of Trang. The island is part national park and part resort and is generally only open during the high season between November and April. 

 

Koh Kradan’s two kilometers beach is spectacular and regular features in write ups about the best beaches in the world. 

 

While the island offers easy access to top class snorkeling and diving, just going for a swim not far from the shore will let you spot an abundance of fish and coral. Measuring only 2.5 square kilometres, there are no roads or cars on the island, and everything can be reached on foot.

3. Koh Ngai

 

Technically part of Krabi province, this tiny island is located 45 minutes from Trang mainland. 

 

The island measures just 4km long and 2km wide and you can see pretty much everything in one afternoon! 

 

The island consists of a single road that connects two beaches. The waters are crystal clear and the beaches spectacular. 

 

If you’re looking for tranquility and want to spend your days not doing a great deal save for the occasional bit of snorkeling or reading a book outside your beach bungalow, you might just think Koh Ngai is paradise. 

4. Koh Libong

 

Koh Libong is the largest island in Trang and while its beaches aren’t quite as spectacular as some of the others in the province, it is still an attractive destination well worth visiting. The island itself measures 40 square kilometres, with large parts of it remaining uninhabited. 

 

The best way to see the island is to rent a motorbike and go off exploring. Another popular activity is to go on a kayak tour in search of the local dugong population - the endangered marine mammal feeds off the nearby sea grass. 

5. Wat Tantayapirom Phra Aram Luang

 

Get your cultural fix by visiting Wat Tantayapirom Phra Aram Luang. Located in Trang city, the beautiful Wat Tantayapirom Phra Aram Luang is known for its towering white pagoda.

 

6. Thung Khai Botanical Gardens

 

The Thung Khai Botanical Gardens is located in Yan Ta Khao and features botanical and herbal gardens, a botanical library and plant museum.

7. Rajamangala Aquarium

 

Located within the Faculty of Science & Fisheries Technology, Rajamangala University of Technology, the Rajamangala Aquarium is home to more than 61 display tanks, as well as several fishponds and has a wide variety of both freshwater and marine fish and amphibians. Located 30kms from Trang city centre, open daily. 

8. Thailand's first rubber tree 

 

While not a main attraction, it is certainly a point of interest. Trang is home to what is claimed to be Thailand’s first rubber tree. It is located outside the Kantang Agriculture Co-operative and represents the first group of rubber trees that Phraya Ratsadanupradit planted to pioneer the rubber plantation industry in Thailand in 1899.
