Actually we should be talking about a bile duct infection, not a liver infection. If not treated relatively quickly it can die away as an infection and possibly return some years later and spread from the bile duct to the liver as cancer.

My understanding having had it and obviously read a lot at the time - happy to hear medical opinion or authoritative evidence to dispute that.

The infection only is not recurring unless you eat more. The fluke does not multiply in the duct or liver. It's not that serious until it is heavy. Many mostly in Issan are continuously infected for many years.

It is easily detected by stool ova and parasite (O&P) examination available are any Thai hospital. If you're back home it could be missed because laboratory technologist may lack experience. It is easily treated in Thailand.

So many of the reactions to this ERRONEOUSLY titles thread display a massive ignorance of what pla-ra is and what the dangers actually are.

I think one of te problems is that the avatar EL speaker on THaivisa has a very limited menu.

They are unaware that preserved ferments foods are eaten all Ove the world - even their own countries but since the advent of American-style supermarkets and industrial ultra-processed foods, many have lost touch with real food.

This is clearly seen in the obesity levels of expats in Thailand and the increased obesity within Thais themselves as the supermarkets being to dictate diet.
