Health insurance for my Thai helper

Recommended Posts

I have a Thai woman who cooks, cleans, runs errands, and does my medical stuff. I want to get her decent medical care. What would that cost?

Absolutely nothing, the free government hospitals are really good.

In some parts of the country, especially the large cities, that is true. The government health care in some areas is still pretty weak. Also, at the better government hospitals, the quality of the treatment is good, but you can easily wait six hours before getting to see the doctor. There is a reason why Thai companies tend to provide basic health insurance for their staff.

The cost of health insurance depends on a number of factors, notably age, the level of coverage desired and deductibles.

Depends on age of insured and the amount of cover need.

Have her contact a few of the major Thai insurance companies and get some quotes...you can then pay her premiums

This is a pretty cheap one.  Just click the 'Get a quote now' button and you will get a popup to put in age and occupation category.  That will show you the costs for that plan without having to give out any other details.  This is for Thailand only coverage.

For an example a 42 year old Category one with 750,000 per year coverage costs 20,028/year.

AIA were about 20,000 per year last time we had a maid.

If she has a bank account she will be able to get a decent insurance policy there.

Around 10 000 baht per year. They will try to keep pushing to sell you more but just stick to the basic plan.

She's under the ฿30 per visit at the hospital scheme from the government,so why would you pay for an insurance? Raise her salary instead.

You could pay a social security fee for her, that would cover even more than health (at government hospitals). Normally it's 10 percent of the salary, bu there is a voluntary fee available, I think it's in the range about 500 baht a month.
