rooster59
Pattaya: Filthy black water floods into the sea just as authorities plan to open beach again Image: 77kaoded Just when tourists thought it might be safe to go back into the Pattaya sea again comes news that filthy black water has once again blighted the area. 77kaoded said that comment was rife from the foreign community in Pattaya after video on the We Love Pattaya fan page showed the dirty water gushing into the sea from a pumping station near the entrance to Walking Street. The caption on their main picture just said "Black Sea". Reporters went to the scene and found the water had stopped flowing but evidence of the damage done was everywhere. They surmised that this event was a result of heavy rains all through the night Thursday/Friday. They said this would damage tourism and damage the sea and called on the authorities to act. Pattaya's beaches have been closed as a result of lockdown measures but are slated to reopen on Monday. The resort's long suffering residents will have to practice social distancing - but that distancing may well mean staying away from the sea. Popular Post darksidedog
I have this odd sense of deja vu. Many times in the past we have seen this and it was suggested that hotels with illegal drainage were major culprits, but with them pretty much all closed that lie argument can't be used this time. I would dearly love to know how much money has been allocated over the years to solve this and where it has gone, as clearly it hasn't been spent where it should have been. Funny that when someone flashes a bit of skin or a couple have nookie on the beach the place goes into an uproar about image, when this is a far bigger disgrace and brings the place into disrepute far more. 47
Popular Post stephenterry
I'm Thai bashing now, because the prevention of pollution, be it river and sea wastage, or burning forests, or even junking rubbish along the roadside or in the fields, seems to be off their governing radar. Pattaya beach is a constant health risk, IMO, but zero action taken to reduce it. AND - how many years has Chiang Mai province been dangerously polluted each spring, but zero EFFECTIVE prevention made by the governor? None. Okay, rant over... 22

Popular Post Phuketshrew
I would bet that most of those structures built over the sea discharge their raw sewage directly into the water below, and have been doing so for years.

Rant away; when Thailand joins the ranks of proper countries & we can trust Government health figures, it will be shown that more people are dying prematurely through respiratory diseases than through Covid or road kills.

Popular Post Kerryd
Looking at images on Google, the place looks like it's abandoned ! Probably a pump crapped out and the system defaults to "dump into ocean" to prevent the sewage from backing up in the system (which could cause pipe ruptures and leaks even in quality systems using skilled labour and decent materials). We had a problem like that in Kandahar shortly after we won the Waste Management contract there. Some employees of the previous contractor (I won't mention KBR by name) sabotaged a part of the system by sneaking into an area and shutting off some valves. That resulted in too much pressure in some of the sewage pipes leading to ruptures and leaks (and <deleted> coming up through drains in some places). By the way, "black" water generally refers to water containing raw sewage (urine and shi*) while "grey" water generally refers to stuff like shower and sink drains as well as rain run-off. Here's another pic from the same article of that pumping station at low tide. 4
Popular Post Kerryd
I look at that and think about all those people you see on that beach fishing and collecting clams/crabs. One more reason not to eat seafood around here ! 4

Chang_paarp
A couple more big storms and the water will run clear(ish) as the drains get washed out. It will need some time for the build-up yo clear. The drain clearing obviously did not get as far as the contractor promised city hall.

Popular Post ftpjtm
I have witnessed the evolution of a Thai neighborhood and know exactly how this happens. We bought a new house in a new neighborhood 6 years ago. Each house has a septic system for waste water. Each house is surrounded by a concrete wall, and has a coverd storm drain culvert along the wall, with a concrete cap with drain holes in it to allow potential flood water to exit the yard. The streets have covered storm drain culverts to collect rain water, and the storm drain systems from each home connect to the main storm drain culvert. On day one, everything was great, similar in design to a western neighborhood. But then people started making home "improvements", adding on to houses (often connecting the house to the wall). As kitchen sinks were added, and wash rooms were added, the builders would connect the drains to the drainage culverts along the wall instead of connecting them to the septic tank sewer drain. We added a washing machine at our house, and the installer was furious that I wanted him to take the extra effort to connect to the septic system rather than dropping the washer drain hose down into a hole in the cap of the storm drain. But others obviously connected "grey water" sewage into the storm drains. On dry days, especially after dinner time when dishes are being washed, you can hear the waste water rushing through the storm drains, as a stench of rotting garbage, dish soap, and laundry detergents wafts through the air surrounding the street's storm drain grates. I've explained the problem to several neighbors, but most don't comprehend what I'm talking about. Most don't understand the difference between a storm drain and a spetic system, and some don't even realize that they have a spetic tank in their yard. Some have put tile floors over their septic tank making it completely inaccessible to service. Now imagine the older parts of Pattaya (and Bangkok and all of Thailand) and imagine how many thousand times over decades illegal connections have been made to storm drains, not all of which are grey water. Some of you must have noticed how street vendors in older sections of Bangkok and Pattaya often put mats or other coverings over storm drain grates near their shops to keep the stench at bay? Imagine the color of the "water" down in those drainage culverts. Edited May 30, 2020 by ftpjtm
