The amount of garbage in Bangkok’s canals is increasing and is starting to block the sewer system causing floods in many areas, the city chief said.

Bangkok Governor Pol Gen Asawin Kwanmuang said just the removal of garbage from canals in Lat Phrao district and under Pradit Manutham Road required five trucks.

The area is one kilometre away from a Rama 9 pumping station which drains water from Lat Phrao Canal and Saen Saeb Canal to Chao Phraya River.

If the garbage blocks the pipes and the tunnels, Bangkok will not be able to drain water during floods in the rainy season, he said.

The same problem is found in other districts, such as Chatuchak. The governor has asked Bangkok residents to take this issue seriously.

Those must have been BIG trucks if it only took 5.  Or maybe that's 5 trucks working full time for weeks on end.

How does it get there, surely people don't just throw their rubbish in the canal.

There again if you saw the astonishing build up of rubbish around the multiple blue bins in our village, I shouldn't be surprised at anything.

This is what Thai's are taught at birth. Open , unwrap and toss, then eat item. Absolutely 0 foresight. No garbage on my property, taught the folks and children garbage belongs in the trash can. Our place is spic and span and everyone enjoys a clean environment and visitors are overwhelmed with the cleanliness also. People can learn if taught.

PLEASE, clean out the floodgates in Bangna, draining into the Chao Phraya. I don't want to be bailing all night again because YOU didn't open them until Central Bangna complained! Then PDQ (of course)! 5T of refuse collected from this single floodgate.
