"Prompt and effective actions".

Should I remind you while all others SEA countries closed their borders to chinese, Thailand was letting them in without any control? Many chinese used Thailand as a layover to reach Europe and the rest of the world.

They went from doing nothing at the beginning, to overreacting with curfew and other draconian measures.

This are just facts.

How many Chinese used Thailand as a layover?

It's not just the hotel business, it goes way, way further than that, with many other types of businesses closing down. And people think the government did a sterling job ????

yes .... and it's not only happening in Thailand, it's happening in Australia, UK & especially the US.

And what was the government suppose to do ?  buy all the empty rooms   ?  buy all the businesses in trouble ?

Last week, myself (USA), and my friends from Scotland, England and Australia got together (1 meter apart), and were looking for a Canadian to translate for us.

You would have needed someone multilingual if you had added Americans, Kiwis and South Africans to the mix.

I understand Canadians don't like being taken for Americans, so it puzzles me why they would want to have the same accent.

Thailand has destroyed its economy over 58 deaths.

Yesterday 62 people died on the road.

Apples and pears. They 'destroyed' (to stick with your description) the economy to save 39,000 deaths* - ie the number of deaths there could have been had they chosen not to destroy the economy and adopted say a UK approach.

*OK 39,000 deaths that have actually occurred in the UK, having a similar sized population to Thailand, is not strictly comparable as there is greater urbanisation in the UK, but maybe you get my point about using the Thai outcome of a tiny number of actual deaths (benefiting as it has from tighter procedures, employed earlier than in many European countries, the US and Brazil) as a comparator in your road-deaths argument is the application of falacious logic.

Hopefully some of them use the downtime to renovate their tired old decor and facilities.

I've paid decent money in the past to stay in places that look like they were used for the set of The Shining. Third World facilities at First World prices is never going to be a winning formula. It used to be acceptable because it was offset by low prices and polite, smiling staff but the strong Baht and surly attitudes of the past few years have removed that advantage.

Nice concept but renovations cost money and that's sadly lacking for small to medium hotel owners right now. If anything the tired decor and worn-out furnitiure will have to last a little longer.

Believe it or not they already changed it to "Amazing trusted Thailand"! Amazing was not enough. Was it the tens of thousands of elephants as far as the eye could see, the warm, gracious and welcome attitude of immigration, the pristine environment and clean air, or the world class transportation network?

Yeah Mike I was aware of it, and crazy it does  sound. Hence my comment.

I can't imagine many Westerners are going to be thrilled staying at a hotel that is filled with Chinese guests. But then these hotels will just be like the zero dollar tour business and virtually no money from the Chinese tourists ends up in local pockets. Chinese colonization of Thailand is on the way.

"Chinese colonization of Thailand is on the way".  Muslim colonization of the UK is on the way. Which country can I go to now when I have to see out my old age?

Even when it does open how long will it take? none of know.

3* and 4*  designations are being generous. Many of the hotels in trouble are low quality facilities that were built cheap and had  relatively expensive overheads. There was a time during peak season when the hotel industry could get by with high rates for mediocre quality. Not anymore, and I am not shedding any tears for the hoteliers in trouble. I have stayed at a few that I will be delighted to see close. Arrogant opportunists who have gotten their comeuppance.

LOL. If only it was that easy. The deaths have been under reported, and that is no mystery. Do you think HIV, hepatitis, TB and other communicable diseases are accurately reported and recorded in Thailand too?

The measures Thailand took  succeeded in containing the spread of a disease. You are criticizing the  health authorities because the measures worked. If you want to see the impact of what happens in countries which  did not do what Thailand did, have a look at russia and Sweden.

You assume that Covid19 is measured  by deaths. Wrong. In the coming weeks, there will be multiple reports issued that shows that  Covid 19 attacks the circulatory system and that there are long term consequences to having been infected.Lung damage due to scarring, cardiac damage and worst of all a predisposition to blood clots causing heart attacks and strokes.  We are only in the first phase of the disease. Wait and you will see the physical damage left behind. This is why  Covid19 is being called our generation's polio.

BTW, what exactly did you expect Thailand to do if there were no international flights and  foreign travelers stopped coming?

Far too many of them. The beachfronts looks more like a ghetto than an enjoyable beach.

Ahhh hah!  Mission accomplished.  Let's see who swoops in to buy them for satangs on the baht (pennies on the dollar).
