Palang Pracharat tipped to crack apart after execs quit

The Palang Pracharat Party (PPRP) is now being tipped to fall apart after the resignation of 18 members of its executive board, all of whom reportedly support the faction led by Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwan.

Rumours that Palang Pracharat members are unsatisfied with their current leader, Finance Minister Uttama Savanayana, have been circulating for months and were confirmed a few days ago. The mass resignation triggered a process to select a new board and leader, which must be completed within 45 days.

PPRP is said to be riven by infighting between several different groups, with the military faction led by the party’s chief strategist, Prawit, seeking to oust Uttama and his economic technocrats from Cabinet.

The move comes as Cabinet members prepare to vie for a slice of the Bt1 trillion budget allocated for economic recovery from the virus crisis.

Political observers say most party members want Prawit as their party leader, while PPRP secretary-general Sontirat Sontijirawong will be replaced by Deputy Finance Minister Santi Promphat.

The Palang Pracharat Party has always been seen as a military party, since it was formed as a political vehicle for high-ranking military officers, namely Prawit, Prayut Chan-o-cha and Anupong Paochinda.

Its purpose is similar to that of another military-based party, the Justice Unity Party, which was established in 1992 but ended up falling apart after its members resigned.

I see Thammanat Prompow is one of the 18 who has resigned. They said they couldn't dismiss him because his conviction of smuggling heroin was done in a foreign court and his fake masters degree doesn't matter cos he has a real bachelor's degree. Now, surely this is a perfect opportunity not to reinstate him later on, right? What excuses will they make when they do?

My guess on Thammanat is he is one of the boys protected from the very top. A man deeply ingrained in what really goes on behind the scenes and the establishment cannot afford to oust him because of what he really knows.

It couldn't happen to a worse bunch of people. Steven100 will be the only one on this forum to shed a tear.   Can only hope their demise will reach and bring down cha cha.

There is an article by Khun Voranai Vanijaka that this "coup' is about clipping the power of coalition partners namely the BJT and DP. Specifically targeted at BJT's Anutin who has been seen as number 2 candidate for PM after Prayut. How it will be done, we will have to see the outcome of the 'coup' and who are involved. Prayut is rumoured to be pulling the strings on this to extend his tenure.

Yes, they're just consolidating power into an even smaller group. The party is here to serve a few big institutions with one person pulling the strings.  The ones pushed out were pushed out because they forgot that their positions were purely ceremonial.

It won't fall apart at all. This whole party was created to allow the junta to remain in control. All there will be is a slight reshuffle to allow people like 'jobs for the boys' Prawit to get to the forefront for more pay days.

The reshuffle will change absolutely nothing for the establishment that is fully running this place.

and I was hoping for the total collapse of it and looking forward new elections 555
