By TTR WEEKLY PHUKET, 4 June 2020: Phuket announced 31 May the reopening of hotels, but authorities forgot to give hotels any advance notice to ensure they could plan their return to business in an orderly fashion. One hotelier told TTR Weekly he was in a department heads meeting when he received a mobile text message saying the province had announced all the island’s hotels could reopen. “They gave no one any warning, but within 30 minutes of the text message on hotels reopening, the social security department sent out messages ending the monthly compensation payments for June,” the hotelier told TTR Weekly. All Thai staff went home. The Phuket Airport is currently closed scheduled to reopen June 15 for domestic flights only. No date set for incoming International flights. Even when foreign tourists come, they will need medical clearance, show they have health insurance and finally they will be subject to a 14 day quarantine. Majority of foreign tourists have a 2 or 3 week vacation. They don't want to spend 2/3 of their holiday under quara ntine. Most of europe , australia.. etc.. BUT.. problem is that they might have to quarantine when they travel home again.. And nobody knows yet IF phuket airport opens for International flights from 1. The number was probably around 40-50% after the huge volume of Chinese were counted. Thailand had become an unfriendly destination so most of the Western tourists went elsewhere. Covid-19 was just the final straw. It will be very difficult to attract Westerners now because the competition for their money will be intense from all countries. And, that's for the few that still have disposable income to spend on holidays, after so many business' were close for 2+ months. I have many fiends who owns hotels and non of them are opening as it would cost more many to open then to stay closed until at least the tourist are allowed back into the country. Is this real Posted June 12, 2020 Share Posted June 12, 2020 People want to believe that tourism will get back to what it was in 1-2 years citing how wonderful Thailand is and all the efforts that TAT and the tourism will be making. Not very likely, though. All other countries will be making efforts, also. And, they have actual experts who know the industry. Thailand was doing it's best to drive away western tourism and complained about the Chinese. Why would they return now? Thailand is not the inexpensive spot it once was. Most likely that half of the hotels and condos will close over the next 3 years. Thailand will become even less desirable with all the vacant structures.
