Pattaya: Deckchairs will open at weekend - just one problem: There are NO tourists!

Sophon Cable TV reporters went down to the beach in Pattaya and found a few deckchair operators had set up their operations.

After the beach was opened on Monday they are being allowed to resume their trade on Saturday.

But the "new normal" will be quite unlike before and besides their report indicated that there were no tourists and the beach was deathly quiet.

Kitrawee, 24, said the last two months had been desperate as he had no income to support his family. It was good that the beach was now open and good news that he could utilise his 7x14 meter pitch again but there were a number of problems.

Firstly, there was no one to sit down.

Secondly, social distancing meant that he could only have 50% of his previous capacity.

Thirdly, the vendors in Pattaya and Jomtien would not be allowed to operate on the second and third weeks of every month from Tuesday to Thursday in order to let the beach regenerate.

Sophon said that Jomtien and Pattaya beaches would take turns.

In addition the authorities were replacing old, dead palm trees to beautify the beaches, they said.

everyone is coming to Hua Hin. There is a story in BP about it . some hotels 100% booked.

yesterday was a holiday and many people on the beach near the Hilton with big storm clouds.

Maybe it's in the forum already...

Have you seen the pictures of Bang Saen beach (closest to Bangkok) of yesterdays holiday?

Completely clogged roads. Road closures necessary. Thousands and thousands.

At the same time: Pattaya fairly quiet.

Curious what it will look on the coming weekend.

Do you think this has anything to do with you being there?

Probably most of these visitors are TV members eager to walk in the footsteps of a local celebrity...

Thank gawd for that...all the riff raff going there and leaving us here in Patts with the creme de la creme....:clap2:

the people who are coming here are middle class and Hiso Thais.

It is a status thing with them to be here and a selfie photo op for Facebook/Instagram.

Sounds perfect , go Pattaya , sit under the clouds and rain at the beach, not be allowed to eat and drink. And when the night comes you can wander the empty streets before going back to the hotel to “take care of yourself.”

Ah this is the life ...

Heck, you've got to feel sorry for these people, they pay City Hall good money for their pitches on the beach, but for months now they've had no income and through no fault of their own. I wonder of any of them even got the 5,000 Baht/month pittance from the government? When things resume, even if they can sell food and drink again, their income is going to be 50% of previous levels at best due to social distancing, and probably much less as there simply won't be anything like as many people around. So will City Hall cut the fees they charge the vendors by 50%-75%? Answers please on a postcard to....

Is 50 percent capacity a problem, when there are no one to sit down...????

"Firstly, there was no one to sit down.

Thirdly, it does not make much difference if his actual capacity is only 50% of the previous capacity if there are no customers.

I'm sure the Soi dogs will find them useful.
