CCSA shoots down July Songkran holiday compensation

Culture Minister Ittipol Khunpluem revealed today (July 12) that the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) had decided to scrap plans to move the postponed three-day Songkran holiday to July.

“The panel now aims to compensate people with one day of holiday per month over three months, near the weekend, not six consecutive days of holiday [as before],” said the minister, adding that plan would be firmed up later.

Ittipol initially proposed June 2 as a Songkran substitute holiday, but Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha said the CCSA needed to monitor the virus situation and capacity of medical personnel to deal with unforeseen events after months of battling the virus.

What complete and utter nonsence from an obviously incompetent 'govt'. What if people have bought airline tickets already. I was close but decided against because I know I'm dealing with imbeciles who have bought their way to power. These idiots are saying near the weekend. Expect Thursdays and Tuesdays. Why do it at all? How can it be Songkran? I want to use a lot of words I would be banned for using.

Guess thaivisa is for opinions.

Mine opposite to yours. For sure the rescheduled holidays should fall on a Fri or Monday. Think it's excellent idea. 3 long weekends over 3 months. Brilliant given current issues with Mr Covid

Basically it's not Songkran.

Use your imagination. Take your water pistol for each long weekend over 3 months.

Why would Songkran be so precious to farang or thai

If you see Songkran as a stream of endless booze excesses and water games then not - hopefully.

This country needs to get back to work and start to rebuild the wasteland that the lockdown has created. The millions who were robbed of work and did not receive any help certainly are not in a holiday mood. They are in desperate need of work.

But I suppose that the minister thought that it would curry favour with voters who have clearly seen the economic ineptitude of this regime. But the public can see through a smokescreen when they don't have enough money for food and rent.

Many out of work are in the tourist industry. If they can get those who have been working/still with money out to spend it then it will help them no? I've been 'locked down' with my family and no where to go for a few months. Now I want to go away for a few days and spend a few quid.

The millions that did work should be denied the opportunity to spend time with friends and loved ones because of a minority that were out of work for a few months ?

Good idea. Rescheduling it seems unnecessary IMO (you wouldn't see normal places trying to reschedule Christmas or New Year), however trying to reschedule it for July was completely absurd.

That's a great idea giving an extra day near the weekend, for some.

I hope the honoured gentlemen thinking these ideas up realize that the Thai labour protection act is based on a 6 day working week. So unless the companies giving the employees the additional day off and throw in Saturday as well, your long weekends will come to nothing. And yes, the majority of Thai companies work the 6 day week.

In addition to the above, if the employees do get the long weekends, this will undoubtedly increase those using public transport thus increasing the supposed risk of spreading the Covid-19.

Defeating their reasoning that they are planning this for safety.
