General public CAN post pictures of alcohol - but celebs should watch their step!

A leading alcohol control doctor has stepped into the row about posting pictures of booze in Thailand being against the law.

Some have called for the scrapping of Article 32 that aims to prevent advertising of the demon drink.

Claims have been made that private individuals can be fined 50,000 baht for posting a picture of wine or beer on platforms like Facebook.

One beer site said it had happened to them earlier in the week.

Now Dr Nippon Chinanonwech has defended the law saying it is there to stop large firms advertising and promoting liquor through things like pictures, words and logos.

Ordinary people can post pictures of what they like so long as they are not actively promoting drinking.

However, that does not necessarily apply to celebrities such as net idols who have a large following.

Their actions as influencers are under close scrutiny and they would be advised not to post pictures of alcohol lest they face prosecution.

The law states that fines of up to 500,000 baht can be levied - the top end would relate to illegal advertising by beer, spirit and wine companies.

Large firms get round this by using their highly recognisable logos for the promotion of other drinks such as soda and plain water, notes Thaivisa.

So, only pictures of unopened bottles then?

Yeah I don't trust this news one little bit. Definition of actively promoting drinking? Just holding an open beer or having drink in hand.

I’m yet to ever see an ordinary person post a picture of their alcoholic beverage with a caption like, “alcohol is bad for you”. It’s always along the lines of, “ah, relaxing with a beer”, etc. The idea that having a drink helps you relax.

As with most laws in Thailand, this is vague and would more than likely lead to a fine once police pushed for it, because we can’t have them losing face or have people exposing how stupid the law is.

Anywho, cheers for the legal advice anyway, doctor.

But virtually everyone in Thailand can claim to be a 'net idol' with a large following. How do we know who is a genuine celebrity and who is just pretend celebrity? This presents a problem. Hopefully the good Doctor will be along again soon...to further enlighten the public with his sensible and well-informed guidance.

I guess this is why a big beer maker pays a B50K stipend to the police chief....to save any prosecutions.....the place is laughable sometimes!

And the big beer companies hold such a monopoly that small Thai Craft Brewers must go outside the country to brew Thai beer.

Help the economy and allow Thai Craft Breweries to exist!  They employ Thai people and show entrepreneurial spirit.
