Thais now see WHO as unreliable source of information: medical specialist

After the Covid-19 pandemic, Thais now view the World Health Organisation (WHO) as an unreliable source on health issues, Dr Manoon Leechawengwongs, a specialist at Bangkok’s Vichaiyut Hospital, said.

He pointed out that WHO is quite slow in providing information and when they inform the public on certain issues, these tend to change constantly. The organisation previously caused Thais to panic about PM2.5 dust particles using the United States as a standard, Manoon said.

On June 9, WHO said Covid-19 asymptomatic infections were rare, but two days later, medical professionals in several countries countered the statement and WHO was forced to change it.

Manoon also said that Thais have done the right thing by wearing face masks – even before WHO saw it as an important means to prevent the coronavirus from spreading and made an announcement to that effect.

He said 18 years in the US taught him that most doctors from many institutions such as the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention have their own measures to deal with public health issues since WHO’s advice and suggestions usually worked for developing countries which have standards that are different from those of developed countries.

Regarding PM2.5 dust particles, WHO’s healthy standard is 25 μg/m3, but even the US could not follow that since the country’s annual PM2.5 level is 35 μg/m3, while Thailand has sets its own standard at 50 μg/m3 a year, he said.

I saw them as unreliable pretty much from day one of the covid situation. Call me crazy, but I just want the facts and relevant health information from doctors and scientists. I don’t want their opinions on thuggish authoritarian regimes.

I still trust and trusted their various health scientists and medical expert advice but the WHO at the top end played a very political game and failed us - not just Thailand but the whole planet.

The WHO may not be perfect, but as a guiding body that operates Globally, they seem to do a fairly good job across the spectrum of their remit.

As for a Standard, who would follow a standard recommended by some guy  from a Thai Hospital

Thai Standard = Foul polluted Air, Unsafe Water ( when available ), trash and trash burning on a monumental scale., Rabies , TB and countless other issues that Thailand needs to address before beating down an organization that until February of 2020 they probably did not even knew existed.

Only educated Thais have even heard of the WHO. Also, most Thais only wear masks because they were told to, and the authoritarian government threatened draconian penalties for non-compliance. Now the masks are coming off, except for shopping and public transport, where stores and transport operators are not allowing anyone without a mask in.

A lot of doctors are getting a lot of face time on main-stream media.
"I'm an expert - listen to what I have to say.  Don't believe those other experts.  I'm the most authoritative expert around.  Look at me.  Look at me!!!"

That's the message I hear.  These people have self-interests that they pursue.  They like the limelight.  They like to aggregate professional credits.  It's a form of social climbing as well and accumulating power as well as access to funding.  Slam one organization in order to heighten your own status among your peers.  And tell others that you speak for the entire country.  Why not?

Problem is - how can you trust anyone?  SARS-Cov2 has created something for sure - it's created an environment where self-interested 'scientists' see an opening to gain reputation as well as a cut of the huge financial windfall should said scientist be affiliated with a company that brings the holy grail of vaccines to market: Covid-19  <cue screams, shreeks, and moans>

Covid-19 has pretty well rip the vale off of machinations of the scientific community.  I've worked in it.  It can be ugly.

How can you say "An unprecedented Virus outbreak like no other seen in 100 years" ! The death rate in Thailand works out at 0.00008%, slightly different from the 50% caused by the Black Plague in Europe, and MUCH safer than driving on any Thai road !  I do not know, and have yet to meet, anyone here who has been affected by this "terrible virus" except of course by all the completely over the top and disastrous regulations foisted on everyone. Let,s keep a bit of relevance and balance here please ????

I listen to a lot of alternative guys ... medicine takes about 20 years to accept something new...

remember the doctor that said MD's should wash their hands in the 1800's...

ridiculed and died without the credit

Md's were going from the morgue or autopsies to deliver babies and wondered why so many women died giving birth ...

Is there is vaccine for CANCER ?  AIDS ? HIV ?

10+ years in with SARS and nothing, they stopped trying because animals trials were ok with the "vaccine" till they got in contact with the real SARS virus and they all died of ...CYTOKINE STORMS...

what "saved" Thailand is not lockdown ...  not the face masks ....

SUN, plenty here + high humidity

rest of world :  winter :  no sun, cold dry air ...

meat packing industry spike ... well ... its indoor and COLD in those freezers = virus attach to dry out cold mucus

maybe some MD will see the light in a few months or years and it might be another THAI invention...

just my 50 satang

118,000 deaths in the USA, over 1 million active cases. Your idea of relevance and balance seems a bit askew to me.

As for regulations, the ones in Australia and New Zealand have worked well in avoiding what has happened in other countries. Thailand seems to have dodged a bullet via environmental and cultural factors.

Believe everyone, believe no one.

The more scientists discredit other scientists, the less scientists will be respected and believed.

My science is better than your science. Where have I heard something like that before? Oh yes, religion, politics, all sorts of fields. The

Science does not stand still. Take Newton, then look at what Einstein did...

America has for-profit hospitals.  When they admit a co-morbid patient—they list it as Wuhan virus.  When a co-morbid dies—they list as Wuhan virus death.

Why?  Because they receive more federal funding for these listings.

Conversely in a public hospital country with a totalitarian government, it behooves them to list Wuhan co-morbid death—as anything else.  A good example of this—China.  Thus it appears China has Wuhan virus under control, and the USA doesn’t.
