Thai tourists and foreign residents have flocked to the idyllic island of Koh Tao in Surat Thani province this week following phase 4 of lockdown easing and the lifting of curfew.

One tourism operator on the island said that local tourist businesses have launched heavy promotional campaigns to draw visitors back. Some operators are offering discounts of 50-70 per cent on packages combining accommodation, food and diving activities. The packages are valid until the end of this year.

The authorities have enforced strict screening at the island’s piers to protect against the spread of Covid-19.

They need a catchy slogan, something like 'come to Koh Tao - we promise to try and not kill you'. That should do the trick...

Or what about a Christmas special- Santa and his Hoe, Hoe, Hoe.-

A couple of considerations here. First of all there is a serial killer on the loose, so staying away from Dark Tao is always a good idea. And second, if Samui looks like this now, one can only imagine what Tao looks like. Other than the diving, why go? Friends of mine who live there say it is very depressing to be there, as 85% of the shops and restaurants are either boarded up, closed for good, or closed until who knows when.

They started working on the roads in Chaweng before Covid, and appear to have stopped, so the place has a bit of a "Dresden post 1945" look to it.

Wow. That is the worst of any place I have seen so far. Yikes! Might be a good time to buy something down there and just let it sit and wait the crisis out.

The entertainment areas in Pattaya and Phuket will look just as bad. No International tourists and they are all closed down. The original poster is only referring to a small part of just one town in Samui. The other 95+% is looking better but still many restaurants closed until the tousts come back.

Chaweng is famous for beaches and bars. Beaches are great at the moment.

Anyone who understands how the local government works here will know that the larger drains are now installed in Chaweng. They are now putting them in Bangrak, Maenam, Bophut etc etc.

When the drains are finished - they will fix the pavements. Then they will re-surface the roads. Not the best way, but the most cost effective.

Good time to upgrade it all withoud the International tourists.
