The government and the private sector in Chiang Mai province have joined hands to launch the "Chiang Mai Safety City Destination" on Thursday (June 18), encouraging tourists to visit the province without worries following the Covid-19 outbreak.

The Covid-19 outbreak severely impacted tourism in Chiang Mai, but the province has not had any Covid-19 cases for a month.

According to a Suan Dusit Poll survey, Chiang Mai was ranked the No 1 tourist destination people wanted to visit after the Covid-19 crisis was overcome.

Pornchai Jitnawasathian, chairman of Chiang Mai Safety City Destination project, said that the project aimed to publicise the readiness for safe tourism, as well as create confidence among tourists on service standards.

"Venues will strictly follow measures to prevent the spread of Covid-19, so tourists and visitors can travel and shop in Chiang Mai safely," he said.

Is Chinag mai province locked out for foreigners already in Thailand? How about foreigners who are already in Chiang Mai? They can't leave and come back?

You better go before the out of control burning starts up again. But don't worry because the thai authorities have stated, for the record, that they will prevail in curtailing the incessant burning that goes on annually for 4-5 months.

Misguided enthusiasm at best, stupidity at worst.

Clutching at straws and not addressing the only real way to get tourists back is to stop relying on the Chinese and create safe travel corridors for countries with very low infection rates.

Thinking they can have tourism and zero rates of Covid19 is plain daft.

They must be talking about Domestic Thai tourists who will save the tourist industry from collapse.

They can't be referring to those Covid-carrying foreign tourists would were locked out the Chiang Mai province for the sin of being non-Thai (even the ones who live here just like Thais), because as all Thais know, foreigners especially farang are all Covid-carrying infection machines.

No, they can't be talking about the return of foreigners - well, maybe Chinese. Yeah, best of luck with those bubble tourist. No doubt they will come flocking back by the millions to save the industry that the Thai leadership destroyed for a seasonal flu.

That's quite an attitude you've developed there......

They are not strictly following anything here. A lot of the restaurant workers in the Thai areas are not wearing face masks. The manager at the wrap place in the bottom of Maya isn’t wearing a mask (almost ate there twice but changed my mind because of it). Some of the gas station people are not wearing masks. I saw an employee at the electronics shop in Central Festival take off his mask and sneeze on a table before putting his mask back on....and he didn’t even wipe the table down.

A warm welcome with face masks and plastic visors, no thanks.

Without a steady influx of foreign tourists Thai tourism is finished and will have to start again from ground zero.

Bit like Essex eh......????
