They give you free samples of half an hour so you can test if it works (and if you can make it work). It's not legal though. But you have no other choice. I pay about 70 pounds a year - a real bargain - but like you I have noticed that recently I get lots of buffering, I have a fibre connection 300 MB - I spoke to both True and AIS about my streams buffering, they said, they DO NOT choke the connection (BS) I reckon.
