Popular Post webfact
Draft law on tackling forced disappearances, torture gets green light By THE NATION Deputy government spokesperson Rachada Thanadirek The Cabinet on Tuesday (June 23) gave the go-ahead to a draft law on the prevention and suppression of torture and forced disappearances, deputy government spokesperson Rachada Thanadirek said. This bill aims to protect every citizen from being tortured or “disappeared” by state officials as well as provide justice to victims. It also targets human rights violations. The bill determines the prosecution, penalty for such acts and guidelines for remedy in line with international standards. Every case will be handled by the Department of Special Investigation (DSI), but if DSI officials are suspected in the cases, the investigation will be handed over to the police. The punishment for torture or forced disappearance is a jail term of one to 10 years and a fine of between Bt20,000 and Bt200,000. Just this noble eightfold path: right view, right aspiration, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, right concentration. You'd think if they're talking about these laws that they'd be doing everything they could to find they guy kidnapped and murdered in Cambodia. Seems they are doing nothing, yet the other day, they had no problems conducting a massive search operation for a lost dog. 7

Popular Post madmitch
The problem is the people involved in this are above the law anyway!
robblok
Sure its bad that such law is not enacted now. But it shows what crybabies foreigners are. Its a step in the right direction (if it is enacted). But all the posters do is moan instead of seeing its progress (again only if they go from draft to law)
Popular Post BobbyL
This bill aims to protect every citizen from being tortured or “disappeared” by state officials as well as provide justice to victims. It also targets human rights violations. More timely press releases considering what has been going on. I am not sure how this can work in a country that openly oppresses freedom of speech and having a differing opinion can quite literally get you 'disappeared'.

Paiman
A good intention if is it truly meant to be. We are defined by our actions, not our thoughts. Thailand can not be a part of *Human rights violations* if it wants to change its image and attract homeless wealthy people. They should go a step further and work on a national strategy to reduce poverty and social exclusion.

Can we have a moment of silence for the poor Thai woman who recently got a five-year jail sentence for posting on social media that garlic is good for your health? Would this new law give jail sentences of one to ten years to the people who sent her to jail? Edited June 24, 2020 by JCP108
Donutz
Better late than never but it comes across as a bit weak. Making me think that the powers that be aren't really enthusiastic about preventing or punishing enforced disappearances.

No need for a response as it's a totally rhetorical question. 3 2

Wouldn't worry too much what robb thinks he likes a bit of authoritarianism and a good old junta He does tend to believe what they tell him so if they say they will do it that's good enough for him even when they prove time and time again they are completely unable to tell the truth...

otherstuff1957
Well, it's a nice law, but since the law does not apply to some people it's kind of worthless.
holy cow cm
Don’t think this has anything to do with the disappearance of the Thai kid exiled in Cambodia. Probably about a former MP LT Colonel who has a history of abductions and murders or more recently a plan to do it again. Maybe about incarcerated Generals and human rights as well. Rohingya.
