Thai vaccine could be ready by ‘early next year’, says Anutin

Thailand may start manufacturing a Covid-19 vaccine by early 2021, said the Public Health Ministry today.

 

“The ministry is working with Bionet-Asia to develop a DNA-type vaccine for Covid-19, and the latest tests on mice show a significant antibody response,” Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said on Thursday (June 25).

 

Bionet is a Thai-French private company specialising in the development, manufacturing and supply of vaccines.

 

“We are preparing samples for inspection by the Department of Medical Sciences and will later apply for human trials with the Food and Drug Asministration [FDA],” he added. “If the FDA gives the green light by July-September, the vaccine should be ready for public use within nine months, or by early 2021.”

 

“Thailand could be among the first countries to manufacture a Covid-19 vaccine. We are planning to share the formula with the world, though Thai people will be top priority to receive the vaccine,” said Anutin.

 

Manufacturing facilities for the vaccine have already been prepared by Bionet, he added.

 

Bionet-Asia president Withoon Wonghankul said the company will ask for FDA permission to begin simultaneous monkey and human trials of the prototype vaccine, which should help fast-track the process.

 

“Normally vaccine trials must be approved and completed in steps, from mice to monkeys and then humans. But in the case of Covid-19, which is an emergency, the FDA will allow trials on monkeys and humans to start simultaneously,” he said.

 

Thailand has launched research on six types of prototype Covid-19 vaccine: DNA, mRNA, protein subunit, Virus Like Particle (VLP), inactivated virus and viral vector. Several public and private organisations have joined hands in the vaccine search, including Bionet-Asia, Mahidol University, the National Science and Technology Development Agency, and Chulalongkorn University. Chula has reported good results in its mRNA vaccine trials on monkeys, and estimates that its vaccine could be ready as early as mid-2021.

Anutin blabbing again. Maybe ready by early next year? I know of no other country in the world where the government has made such speculative claims on a development that is still in the pre-clinical stage. Talk is cheap, wait till you have some results on mass human testing in phase 3 trials.

 

Although they'll need to plan a second wave for the human trials if it ever reaches that stage because there's no virus around for test subjects to get exposed to in Thailand.

Meanwhile with no fanfare or ringing bells from the government,  the UK's second potential vaccine enters human trials over the next few weeks with 300 volunteers taking part in the first phase, this is from Imperial College London.

 

The separate Oxford vaccine is already in stage 2 and 3 human trials, the final ones.

If they jabbed him up first they could combine the two at the same time .. 

As for developing a vackine every man and his dog are on the case right now with more than a few cautioning it will be a long time with some saying maybe never .. 

Not overlooking a successful vackine against a highly contagious virus has only been done once before with Smallpox so the challenges of getting one with unimpeachable effectiveness into syringes for the masses in such a short space of time is just pure fanciful thinking ..

It was a French surgeon 120 years ago who was the first person to use a face mask, to protect the patient from infectious diseases from the surgeon.

For the hard-of-learning like me, does that mean antibodies are irrelevant/not present in Covid-19?

Yes, though though the RNA in Covid-19,is the Antigen, we produce Antibodies vs the Antigen.

That's just untrue. Measles is one of the most contagious viruses ever known with an r0 of 12-18, whereas smallpox is 3 times less contagious and there is a highly successful vaccine for measles which has about 97% effectiveness.

 

Polio is also just as contagious as smallpox and again, there is an effective vaccine for it (more than one, actually). Other diseases which are either just as contagious as smallpox or more so, are pertussis, chicken pox, mumps and rubella. Again, there are effective vaccines for all of them.

But I thought that back in February Thai doctors had the cure for the Wuhan Virus. HAHAHA!

Thailand is good a manufacturing drugs others have developed, that's about the extent of it. Given the quality of the universities here, I'd be VERY reluctant to put anything in my body developed from a Thai research facility. But I'm happy to see that Anutin would be a guinea pig for this experiment.
