BANGKOK (Reuters) - Thailand plans projects worth about 80 billion baht ($2.59 billion) for restoring an economy hit by the coronavirus pandemic, the state planning agency said on Friday.

The projects are aimed largely at helping to boost the farm sector, tourism and consumption and would provide more than 400,000 jobs, Thosaporn Sirisumphand, head of the National Economic and Social Development Council, told a briefing.

The plans are expected to be put to cabinet for approval on Tuesday.

They will be financed by some of the government's 1 trillion baht of borrowing as it attempts to mitigate the impact of the outbreak on businesses and jobs.

Though Thailand has so far reported only 3,162 infections and 58 deaths from COVID-19 and has lifted most restrictions, its economy has been badly hit by the global pandemic.

Southeast Asia's second-largest economy could shrink 8.1% this year, the biggest contraction on record, according to the central bank.

Really, hmm, was wondering why my wife has been taking food to feed her family of late, first time in 5 years, no work, no income means no food.

Perhaps she is feeling generous ????

Someone's thinking again, now that worries me, especially when people are starving all around Thailand.

Not sure people are starving, when they all have farms or family with farms upcountry. And for those living close to a forest, they can forrage. Only those unfortunate enough to live in densely packed urban areas and who have no access to family or land in the countryside might suffer this fate.

Why should they forage, would you ? Or are you quite happy with your retirement fund sitting in the bank. People like you make me sick. Have you helped anyone ? You obviously don't read about the suicsides and stuff like that ! But you're right no one is starving ????????????

Foraging is someThing a large part  of what the peasant population do anyway.  RaTs, snakes, fish,  yabbies,  mushrooms, frogs,  certain plants....  Even paddie rice.  A woman comes out to wifeys orchard every year to collect fallen mangoes to feed her ducks.  No shame in being a scrounger.   If people are starving they can go to the local wat and share breakfast with the monks... Maybe the content of your post is a bit off track due to your lack of local knowledge.

Yes, my misses can walk through a forest and come out with a bag full of edibles.

Lived in the jungle until she was 15, and the family just lived on what they could find.

She still has the 30 rai of jungle up in Nan, 15Km from the nearest paved road, no electricity, no water.

Whether I'd want to eat it is another matter.

I think the stark contrast in upbringing, education and backgrounds are contributing factors why so many farang/Thai marriages fail.

Really out of touch farang  to say people are not ' starving '.  Fact is there are situations where locals didn't get gov handout even though they had no income ! So if you want to dance on the head of a pin call it ' extremely hungry' becausenot  getting regular meals

Mainly pay-offs for the generals running the projects (and their friends, family and assorted lovers).

Of that 80 billion you will see very little improvement for folk ! Totally selfish corrupt governance and officials! Recently a school director pocketed 200,000 for kids school meals by just feeding dried noodles ! Have to remember that Thailand has a massive status  difference!

Food grows free everywhere, their are fish, frogs and snakes in every field and garden, temples feed anyone that asks, nearly all the population have a family farm tucked away in some rural hell-hole. I've never heard of a hungry Thai, they might not be able to keep up the repayments on their car, or pay for their kids new school uniforms (or mobile phone subs), but they ain't hungry.
