The Public Health Ministry is preparing more than 20,000 hospital beds and 1.3 million doses of medicine to deal with the second wave of Covid-19 infections that may hit the country once the state of emergency has been lifted.

Dr Sukhum Kanchanaphimai, the ministry’s permanent secretary, said that as of Monday (June 29) there were only 58 Covid-19 patients undergoing treatment in hospital, and they were in a stable condition as they did not need respirators.

He added that the new Covid-19 cases during the fourth phase of easing restrictions had come from overseas and that 232 people were currently under quarantine. Sukhum also said that though there are no new cases that have originated in the country, the fifth round of lifting restrictions may pose the risk of a second wave, so the ministry has to be prepared.

The ministry has made 571 ICU beds, 11,206 beds for serious cases and 10,349 beds for normal cases available across the country. Sukhum said these should be enough to accommodate up to 500 patients a day.

Meanwhile, 1.12 million N95 face masks, 511,000 protection suits and 11,000 respirators have been set aside for emergencies, while some 300,000 favipiravir pills and other medicines have also been stockpiled.

Separately, researchers are continuing to work on developing a Covid-19 vaccine, with 20 prototypes currently being tested on six species of animals, including rats and monkeys. Human testing is expected to begin between July and October, and if they prove to be successful, up to 30 million doses are expected to be produced. Each dose will likely cost between Bt600 and Bt900.

Thailand is collaborating seven organisations from three other countries that have already conducted human trials to cut down on the time it takes to launch a vaccine.

With no domestic infections for 35+ days the second wave can only come from inbound persons.
They we are told are under strict control for reasons of entry and are monitored during the visit/stay...

so where is this second wave going to stem from?

The answer is in one of the other news articles today...

Taweesin said foreigners seeking certain types of medical treatment such as some cosmetic surgery or fertility treatment could also be allowed into the country.

Business visitors from Japan, South Korea, Singapore, China and Hong Kong could also be exempted from a two-week quarantine period under a fast track entry if they have certificates to show they were free from COVID-19 and were tested upon arrival.

he's not alone preparing.... so am I, not wanting to sound to pessimist, but for the sake of i, I can't understand how there are not reported infections, many countries are dealing with infections from asymptomatic people, yet Thailand has none reported, are they still doing regular testing or just random testing

get ready for another closing.  Covid will continue to decimate the world well into 2021 to 2022.  No vaccine = NO cure = more death!

and the recent news show the virus has turned into a variety of strains, it keeps mutating that means, the current  vaccines under study, maybe not be effective on the new strains

I wonder why ALL countries are constantly talking about this "second wave".

Reminds me of the underlying WHO Model that goes until end of 2021 with many waves and lock downs to come.

The model is a complete hoax but the WHO obviously sticks to it.

And isn't it funny that asymptomic people don't spread the virus according to the WHO ?

And masks don't work ... according to the WHO

And social distancing works only in bars but not in buses and airplanes

And the virus likes beaches and bars much more than Restaurants

... and hospitals are empty !!!

And there is not even a validated Covid-19 PCR test ???

I guess if they tell us about a Som-Tam Pandemic tomorrow, people will also believe it

Be careful. Using facts, logic and common sense can make you very unpopular in these paranoid times.

Not only is the PCR test unreliable, but the existence of the SARS virus alleged to cause the so-called COVID 19 respiratory disease has yet to be scientifically confirmed.

this guy says "The ministry has made 571 ICU beds, 11,206 beds for serious cases and 10,349 beds for normal cases available across the country. Sukhum said these should be enough to accommodate up to 500 patients a day."

so over 6 months there have been 3100 cases, and this guy thinks they will need 20,000 beds for a potential 2nd ripple?

unless they plan on bringing in busloads of infected tourists, that seems a bit unreasonable...
