The government’s Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) today gave the green light for Thai boxing matches to resume, though viewers will have to watch them on television.

CCSA spokesperson Taweesin Visanuyothin said on Wednesday (July 1) that boxing matches can be held again, but spectators will be banned from stadiums as part of Covid-19 preventive measures.

The Army-run Lumpinee Boxing Stadium spawned one of the largest clusters of Covid-19 cases in Thailand when it allowed a March 6 boxing match to go ahead despite lockdown restrictions.

The CCSA is concerned over a possible second wave of Covid-19 infections after the fifth phase of lockdown easing allowed high-risk businesses and activities to reopen on July 1.

A total of 12,000 hospital beds have been spared to support new patients, while 319,994 doses of anti-virus medicines such as favipiravir have been stockpiled in preparation for a surge in infections.
