What do you think about Mark Wiens?

His food vlogs are entertaining, but they're all way too enthusiastic and positive, that I'm having trouble taking him seriously. He lives in bangkok and he's still raving about absolutely EVERYTHING? Really? No one is that positive. If they are being genuine, that is...

I find his videos interesting and have found a good few places in and around BKK because of them, one place really close to home that I'd never have discovered otherwise as I just don't go there normally.  Agree though that he could perhaps dial back the enthusiasm a bit, it's difficult to fathom at times which out of the way places are REALLY worth making the effort to go to and which are just good when EVERYTHING he eats or drinks is ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC.

He's involved in a restaurant venture in Thong Lo, a place called Phed Mark, specialises in doing just Phad Gra Bao Muu (stir fry pork with Thai Basil) with three 'heat' options, spicy, very spicy and extremely bloody spicy.  The fried eggs they use are duck eggs.  Not bad and not a bad price either (around THB 110 IIRC).  Ordered it a few times from LINE MAN during the lock down.

The man makes me deeply uncomfortable, he comes across as tearfully cheerful as if someone is holding a gun to his head and telling him "Appear happy and smiley". He's so fake. The least genuine person I've ever seen.

Until it comes to the food when he's  truly having the time of his life. And he really knows his food.  His recipes, or rather rip-offs of other people's recipes, are excellent. He's very good at what he does. Stealing recipes from other people.

Which is all that matters really.

I use "his" recipes all the time, to be honest. One thing I like is that Mark is honest about food, if it's not that good he'll tell you. Yes, he's very enthusiastic, but if the noodles are too thin he'll be sure to tell you.

Having said that there's another guy, Joel Bruner, who is an even better food blogger, and that's saying something because Mark is excellent at what he does. Imagine my shock to find out Joel and Mark are childhood friends.
