Cambodia’s Ambassador and Representative of the Permanent Mission to the United Nations Office in Geneva, An Sokkhoeurn has expressed disappointment on behalf of the country over remarks by delegations of Belgium and Switzerland over human rights issues in the Kingdom during the COVID-19 pandemic. The remarks highlighted Cambodia’s emergency law which was approved recently amid the spread of COVID-19. However, since being approved, it has never been used in Kingdom yet.

A statement signed by Mr Sokkhoeurn on Thursday said: “It is with deep disappointment that both [UN] delegations purposefully overlooked and underreported Cambodia’s human rights-integrated response to the COVID-19.” It said Cambodia has shown its humanitarian support to save lives of stranded passengers on the MS Westerdam cruise ship as well as free treatment offered to one virus-infected passenger. Mr Sokkhoeurn added: “Any reliable and meaningful debate should dwell on statistical and factual evidence rather than perception and hearsay.”

Unless Cambodia suddenly decides to make face masks mandatory (apparently it's one of the few countries in the region where they're voluntary) and imposes all sorts of strict measures, then I would say to my great surprise, Hun Sen has actually handled this outbreak in a reasonable matter. Certainly when compared to the draconian measures Thailand, Myanmar, Vietnam, the Philippines, Singapore, Malaysia, India and China imposed at the time (some of these countries have since eased off on their harsh measures).
