Popular Post webfact
NFL: Trump slams Washington Redskins as team re-evaluates name By Amy Tennery FILE PHOTO: A Washington Redskins football team logo is seen on a shirt at a sporting goods store in Bailey's Crossroads, Virginia, U.S., June 24, 2020. REUTERS/Kevin Lamarque NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump criticized the Washington Redskins for reviewing their team name on Monday, as top retailers continued to pull the NFL franchise's merchandise from shelves. Under mounting pressure from sponsors and racial justice advocates, Washington Redskins owner Dan Snyder said on Friday the team would rethink its controversial name, with Major League Baseball's Cleveland Indians following suit. "They name teams out of STRENGTH, not weakness, but now the Washington Redskins & Cleveland Indians, two fabled sports franchises, look like they are going to be changing their names in order to be politically correct," Trump said in a tweet. The Redskins, one of the oldest NFL franchises dating back to the 1930s, have long resisted calls for a new name and logo. The term "Redskins" is widely seen as a slur against Native Americans. The Cleveland Indians, which are to begin playing in July after the COVID-19 outbreak put the MLB season on hold, have phased out their "Chief Wahoo" logo in recent years but retained the use of their 105-year-old nickname. Trump has previously voiced support for the Redskins team name and in 2013 hit at then-Democratic U.S. President Barack Obama, who said he would "think about changing" the name. Controversy over the team's name resurfaced in recent weeks amid widespread racial and social justice protests across the United States after the death of George Floyd in police custody. Top sponsors, including PepsiCo and FedEx Corp, which has the naming rights to the NFL team's Landover, Maryland, stadium, called for a change last week, while retailer Nike said it welcomed the team's decision to review the name. On Monday, all Washington Redskins merchandise was gone from the Nike online store and was no longer being sold by the retailer. A Target spokesman told Reuters on Monday that it began the process of removing Washington Redskins merchandise from its shelves and online store over the weekend. Walmart said on Friday that it would discontinue the sale of products bearing the team name or logo. Popular Post TopDeadSenter
Cancel culture. Renaming sports teams. Renaming streets. Pulling down any and all historic monuments they can find including abolitionist Frederick Douglass. Threatening those that disagree or hold differing opinions with losing their job, home, family. Progressive America, is clearly not the land of the free, and other than the Trump regime and MAGA supporters it is no longer the home of the brave either. I suspect(and hope) this will backfire on the Redskins big-time. All of these uber progressive companies like Gillette regretted their virtue signalling antics as sales plummeted. It's not called "Got Woke, went Broke" for nothing. 26 2 9 5

Haiti ? You are talking about Haiti here? Huh What? from Snyder's Skins of the National Football League to the Haitian Revolution ... What the Frog ? That is one mighty tangential leap. And on that note, I'm going to need more coffee, might as well do something productive. Morning Makro trip. WooHoo! ezzra
I would agree to all proposed name changing and name erasing to the last of them, the question however remain, Would it make any difference in people's hearts and minds? my guess it will NOT, and that in the end all of this hoopla and brouhaha will all be for nought and cosmetics appearances... "But my Mommy told me that if I did not like to eat my carrots or peas I had to eat them. This is why I now protest for the rights of those who are forced to eat their carrots and peas".....and it continues with "Remove the Gerber baby picture from the food jars, because the baby is to cute, I am ugly so why is my photo not the face of a product, I am offended" When will this <deleted>tola stop... 3

I'm not sure in what Universe 'brave' and 'bone spurs' go together. Also, I do not see too many Combat Ribbons on jared or barr or ratcliffe or ivanka or kellyanne or anybody in that Administration, nor among those who attend his rallies. OTOH, I know many folks whom anyone would call 'brave', who served in everything from DEVGRU to Ground Branch who are most definitely not fans of 45. I guess all of our experience can vary. 14 2 1 1

Popular Post JonnyF
What a load of testies. I see the name as paying tribute to the native Americans, not demeaning them. One minute these Woke idiots want everything to be about race. The next minute, you can't mention, acknowledge or celebrate race unless they say so. I'm really looking forward to the kickback on this ultra Woke period. It's coming. I was pleased to see the 6 F1 drivers had the courage to stand up to Lewis Hamilton's pressure to take the knee to BLM this weekend. It's funny how he's quite happy to take a paycheque from Mercedes who had links to the Nazi regime. Maybe he's anti semitic like BLM? 9 1 1 1

One thing you don't mention is that it was part of a ksuccessful revolt of the slaves against French rule. He murdered them because they were French settlers who had slaves. Lots of rage there. He also allowed Polish mercenaries who defected from the French Foreign Legion to settle and stay in Haiti. Presumably, they were white. 1 3
Popular Post Jingthing
Well first of all the obvious. For 45 this is just another culture wars diversion tactic so that people won't focus on the main reason he is losing so badly - - his horrific failure in his response to the pandemic. That said I grew up a Skins fan and back then it didn't even cross my mind that the team name was offensive. In fact didn't really think about the native American aspect at all. More like it was a romantic thing. One of my schools teams were the Navajos. Probably more respectful but again didn't think about it. Of course I never even met a Native American until I was in my 20s. So they weren't real to me. Kind of like Jews in rural Missouri. Check for horns? (True story.) But times change. Native Americans are real. The team name is clearly racial if not racist. I always thought the defunct Washington Senators had the best name for a DC team. But maybe the Washington Swampies would be better. Anyway a lot of people have a lot of emotion connected to the Skins. Oh well. At the end of the day the name will be changed and it will not be that big of a deal. To add. Scalp the Dallas Cowboys! Popular Post Eric Loh
Colour shouldn't be used a racial identifier. It is simply offensive and disparaging. Why so hard to understand for Trump unless it is dog whistle to his white supporters. 4 1 1

Popular Post Jingthing
I think my two examples are worthy of discussion. It seems to me that there is a big difference between names like the Redskins and names like the Navajos. The braves may lie somewhere between them. Can't using names like the Navajos be seen as recognition to the tribes of people that are the only original Americans? 1

I see some people have drunk the Kool-Aid on 45s culture wars diversion tactics. Back to rationality. I think name changes and decisions on monuments should be made on a case by case basis. Confederate stuff should have been all gone long ago. Do Germans have monuments to Hermann Goring in the public square? To add this is an expat forum. Being an expat has nothing to do with being patriotic or not. 45 fans and Republicans do not own patriotism. 9 1 2
