Atsushi Taketani, president of the Japan External Trade Organisation (Jetro), met Deputy Prime Minister Somkid Jatusripitak on Wednesday (July 8 ) to talk about the potential of Japanese manufacturers shifting base.

“At this point, the Japanese Chamber of Commerce has surveyed companies that are suffering from the impact of Covid-19,” Somkid said, adding that the Japanese representative had assured him that Japanese manufacturers will not shift base to other countries for now.

“Moreover, the Japanese Chamber of Commerce has forecast that the economy will face challenges during the second half, especially the third quarter,” Somkid quoted the Jetro president as saying.

However, when asked to provide figures on the state of Thailand’s economy, the deputy premier told reporters to pose the question to Prime Minster Prayut Chan-o-cha.

Covid has given many International Companies the opportunity to assess their business model going forward.

With the almost total breakdown in Supply Chains around the Globe, many are looking at sourcing closer to home, not just because of supply breakdown, but also skill levels, quality and policing.

The Japanese are always the first to react to a new business model, and I would expect the other nations to follow suit.
