Thai schools told they cannot arbitrarily cut students’ hair

Thailand’s Ministry of Education has issued a letter, to all schools under its jurisdiction, to abrogate the 1975 regulations, regarding their students’ hair style and length, and to forbid the arbitrary cutting of students’ hair at school.

 

Education Permanent Secretary Mr. Prasert Boonruang, who also serves as the spokesman for the Education Ministry, said that schools which still enforce the 1975 regulation must adopt the 2005 regulation, which states that punitive actions against rogue students include warnings, probation, behavioural score deduction and performing social activities.

 

Commenting on a case earlier this week, which occurred at a high school in the northeastern province of Si Sa Ket, in which a girl student was forced to have her hair cut in front of other students during the flag-raising ritual, Mr. Prasert said that the school administrator had exceeded his remit.

 

The student’s mother was so upset over the forced haircut, which she described as a deliberate attempt to shame the girl in front of her peers, she threatened to move her daughter to another school.

The incident, which was posted on social media, has drawn widespread criticism of the school administration’s behaviour.

 

Mr. Chuchart Kaewnok, director of the provincial education office, has reportedly asked the girl’s mother to delay moving her daughter to another school, while officials try to resolve the problem.

Very good idea but long overdue.

They should send them a second letter telling the teachers not to beat students anymore or have sex with them because many do not seem to know that.

Move that school administrator to an inactive post.  Make him prostrate himself in front of the girl and her family and pay remuneration for the emotional distress he has caused.  Make him stand up in front of the school and apologize to the entire student body who had to watch this.  However, this is Thailand and it will never happen.  I would fire him and then rehire him as the janitor...he is not worthy in my book of anything more.

The teacher at a minimum should pay half of his salary to the girl until her hair has grown back to the same length,  wouldn’t do it again if it hurts the pocket

Maybe dropping the silly scout uniform when none of them are in it, marching about to nationalist songs and grovelling on the floor might be next ????

This stuff really brings my blood to a boil. Anyone cutting my daughter's hair would soon find him or herself with a black eye and a new haircut of their own, reminiscent of the boys in saffron robes.

An other reminder? How about firing those teachers or if those teachers believe physical punishmentand humiliation fixes things: cut their hair,  make them crawl on the floor and then fire them.

That will give the school a HUGE lesson, they will certainly NEVER do it again.

The trauma and humiliation will stay with this young girl for the rest of her life so in this case I believe in an eye for a eye so string that teacher up naked and shave their head, to the gallows with them

That should solve it! Like the seat-belt law in pickups; the law about crime re-enactments; the rules for police bandit stops; litter; air pollution; speeding; drunk driving.  Thailand has got it sorted.

Means absolutely zero. 2005 still allows the school to administer their own length rules. It was just recently that an addition allowed for longer styles.

Depends who you mean by we, most education systems are far better than Thai government schools, whose purpose appears to be drilling into them what to think, not how to think.

I see nothing wrong with a school uniform - Many countries have them. At least they all 'look the same' ..

 

Maybe they should move with the times and pick something more progressive and forward thinking .... ????

But Thai families have to buy several uniforms not just one, including the forced wearing of guide and scout clobber one day a week, pointless waste of money.
