Army denies responsibility for Covid-positive Egyptian soldier

Colonel Winthai Suwaree

The Army has denied responsibility for the visiting Egyptian soldier who visited a Rayong shopping centre before testing positive for Covid-19. The case caused uproar among Thai citizens, who targeted the Army with a flood of social media criticism for allowing the soldier into the country at a time when most foreigners are banned entry.

However, Army spokesman Colonel Winthai Suwaree said today that the military were not responsible for inviting the Egyptian soldier.

Winthai said the soldier and other members of his delegation passed the criteria for 11 types of foreigner allowed to access Thailand. None of the delegation had to undergo quarantine.

Meanwhile, a similar message appeared on the Army’s Facebook PR page this evening (July 13).

“We see that people are criticising the Army or its commander for helping to allow an Egyptian soldier to transfer to Thailand. We would like to inform you that this piece of information is not true. Please do not believe people who have an agenda to attack the Army,” read the post.

The Army PR team advised the public to follow updates from the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA), which would inform people about the case soon.

The soldier arrived at U-Tapao Airport on Wednesday before testing positive for the virus on Sunday. Authorities have not released the name of the shopping centre he visited. He was one of three new Covid-19 cases confirmed by the CCSA today.

The provincial administration of Rayong province has ordered the quarantining of some staff at, and partial closure of the hotel where a member of an Egyptian military delegation, who was later found to be infected with COVID-19, stayed.

Health officials in the province have been working frantically to trace anyone who may have been in physical contact with the infected soldier, after it was reported that several members of the delegation had left the hotel and visited a mall, among other places.

Governor Surasak Charoensirichoke held an urgent meeting this morning (Monday) with the Provincial Infectious Diseases Committee, after it was confirmed that one of the soldiers tested positive for COVID-19, after the delegation’s departure from Thailand on July 11th.

Lets see if they can contain it.

Some Rayong schools closed Tuesday over COVID-19 Egyptian soldier

Six municipal schools and two nurseries in Thailand’s eastern province of Rayong are to be closed from tomorrow (Tuesday) until further notice, as a precautionary measure, after members of an Egyptian military delegation visited a mall and other venues in the province last week.

The students, except children at nurseries, will learn through online platforms.

One of the soldiers was found to be infected with COVID-19 and it is not known yet whether he was among the group who ventured out of their hotel, to go shopping and sightseeing, during their brief stay in Rayong.

Has there been any progress whatsoever in the tracking front besides the useless thaichana? Do they have a task force for manual tracking? Did they use the time bought by extremely expensive lockdowns for anything? Testing capability?

Right. So, we've had this app going for months. People who are testing positive have been in the community. Zero instances of the app being used for its intended purpose?
