Popular Post webfact Posted July 13, 2020 Popular Post Share Posted July 13, 2020 Jomtien Beach being widened under Bt1.1bn project By THE NATION Jomtien Beach in Pattaya is being widened under a Bt1.1-billion project to replenish a vast expanse of sand eroded over the years by the sea. The Marine Department aims to expand around 7 kilometres of beach to a width of 35-50 metres in order to preserve the sands as a tourist attraction in the resort city. A budget of Bt1.16 billion will be spent on the project’s two phases, said Marine Department director general Wittaya Yamuang. Under the first phase, 640,000 cubic metres of sand will be taken from the seabed near Koh Larn to widen about 5.5 kilometres of Jomtien Beach. Work is due to begin in August and expected to be completed by December 15, 2022, said Wittaya. The project will also see construction of three breakwaters and a headland to protect the beach. A private firm signed the contract to construct the project – which covers Pattaya and Najomtien municipality – on May 29. They cannot move the road inland because of the condos they have allowed to be built too close to the beach. I seem to recall Jontiem Beach was always somewhat better in the distant past, and I would travel from Pattaya to avail myself of it. Surprised it needs any effort like Pattaya did, but welcome the idea.... Any progress on effluent dumping though as it often smells unhealthy in modern times. What is the point of putting the water line further away from the beach chairs. Parents won't even be able to see their kids in the water at that distance, let alone supervise them. (Remove the sand, deposit hard core foundations, replace the sand to create a higher level beach) Anyway, some quick figures. Say 40/40 split, sand and break waters, and 20% for fudge, overrun, miscalculation, brown envelopes etc. About 360 baht per cubic metre to remove, transport, relocate the 640,000 cubic metres of sand.
