Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha on Wednesday (July 15) promised the people of Rayong that his government will do its best to rebuild confidence in safety at the province.

The premier, accompanied by Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and Deputy Public Health Minister Satit Pitutecha, visited the eastern province to help boost people’s morale after a Covid-19 infected Egyptian soldier was allowed to roam freely in Rayong.

The infected soldier was among a 31-strong delegation of Egyptian military personnel who landed at Rayong’s U-Tapao Airport last Wednesday before staying in a local hotel and visiting a Rayong shopping mall.

The delegation left Thailand on Saturday (July 11), but a test result the next day confirmed one soldier had Covid-19.

According to the CCSA’s announcement effective July 1, pilots and crew of vehicles who enter Thailand on a mission and with clear schedules of departure must be screened on arrival then quarantined at a registered venue. They are also required to use an app that can track their whereabouts and symptoms.

Foreigners arriving for short trips in Thailand under special travel arrangements with other countries will have to stay in registered accommodation and will not be permitted to go out until they are confirmed free of Covid-19 infection. They will also be closely monitored by medical staff and have to travel in pre-booked vehicles on planned routes. They will also be barred from visiting public places.

The PM also visited the D Varee Diva Central Rayong Hotel, where the infected soldier had stayed with 30 other Egyptian army personnel between July 8 and 11.

The hotel has had to shut its doors for at least 14 days from July 14 and needs to disinfect its premises.

Prayut also visited the Passione shopping mall where the infected soldier had gone on July 10. The shopping mall manager, however, told the PM that the soldier did not touch anything or take off his mask while there.

Earlier on Wednesday, Rayong business owners had submitted a petition at Government House calling on the prime minister to visit their province and reassure local residents in relation to the infected Egyptian soldier.

What about the two activists forcefully arrested without charge and shoved in a truck before his arrival?
Update: It seems they have now been charged with breaking the Emergency Decree and resisting arrest.
