Bangkok Optician (just for exam/prescription) Recommendation

2009

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I went to a general hospital for eye exam cos I have been noticing blurry vision.

After the exam the specialist said that my eye is (otherwise) normal though I have a refractive error and should go to an optician to try lenses cos I will need to wear glasses.

I will order glasses online. I just need to know my prescription.

Can anyone recommend an optician where I can get an eye check up to find out my prescription only?

I am happy to pay for the tests. I just don't want to get pressed into buying overpriced glasses here.

Is it standard practice here for them to give you all the measurements/details without you having to buy frames from them?

Sorry but opticians have nothing to do with eye exams - they cut the lens.  In hospital you should have been seen by an ophthalmologist MD who can do exam and provide prescription.  Are you sure you were actually treated by an ophthalmologist?  Did they actually do manual and computer eye tests before you met the doctor?  If yes ask him for your prescription.  The only other person qualified to provide prescription would be an optometrist but they are few in Thailand as it is a new field and they would mostly be working as commercial shops.

Hmm

I saw the eye doctor at a general hospital.

They did the airpuff test, I read from the chart on the wall with each eye, then I saw the doctor who looked into my eye with this big scope and a bright light (I suppose he was looking at my retina or something).

He said "your eye is normal but you have a refraction error. Go to an optisian like Top Charoen to try lenses. We don't have one at this hospital."

I dunno. Kinda confused now. lol.

Thanks for your help.

Highly recommend this eye hospital (first in Bangkok and still one of the best).  They are not overly expensive and have good doctors.  Ground floor also sells glasses but you do not have to buy from them.

Just an update.

I got my prescription. Thanks to all who posted.

By the way, I couldn't believe how much clearer everything was wearing the new lenses in the hospital. It was insane. I never remember the world ever looking so clear!

By the way...dunno if anyone know what happened, but...ZENNI does not ship to Thailand anymore? I am trying to enter shipping address and Thailand ain't on it. I read loads of posts on her before, so I know they used to. Wonder why the don't anynore? Thailand ain't on the shipping list.

I got a pop up warning this week that shipment to Thailand was temporary suspended due to the covid mess but could not get it to appear again so not sure.  Believe they used Singapore Post to transship and it is currently not available.

Thanks for all you info. Very helpful.

How much is shipping usually with Zenni? With EyeBuyDirect it is 30usd.

Online does seem to be the way to go.

I notice the opticians here have sales on glasses from 999baht but those are probably the same quality as the 6 dollars, aren't they?

I saw a decent set online for 30usd and looking at Top Charoen site there are similar-looking pairs for around 3000thb.

I reckon the mark-up here must be 3-5×

I has been several years since I have ordered but believe was about $10 range.  What is available here is normally very much marked up by the chains and even then will push for more with better/newer/nicer and coverings to match.  Often to the 15-20k range for basic glasses.  But for reading type sold in stores or on street the prices are reasonable.  Some posters have reported good price from some of the independent shops so might be worth reading some of the topics if online is not a good option now.  Or send to US and have transship if that is an option - I received normal letter today which only took 10 days from Washington so mail seems to be getting back to normal inbound.
