World’s Largest Soaring Bird Can Fly 100 Miles Without Flapping Its Wings

Recommended Posts

I always thought the Albatross was the record holder, it is supposed to sleep while flying and I can personally state that I saw one over six hundred miles from land when on board ship in North Atlantic.

Weighing that much,it had to develop not to flap its wings

so much,as it would soon get knackered and fall to earth.

and it helps that they live in mountainous regions,so they

can soar on the updrafts.

Not looking to take away from the magnificence of this bird....

When I flew hang gliders, there were days that once you got up, it was very hard to get back down again, because there was so much LIFT in the area you were flying in. Sometimes it took almost all of one's physical strength to hold the glider in at attitude that in most circumstances would create a dive.

So I am quite sure these birds can fly very long distances without flapping their wings, when the conditions are right.

The only reason they can fly any distance at all is updraughts and thermals. What they have perfected is the ability to locate those 'risers'. But, does it help them in life? One assumes that flying high and long enables them to scan the ground below for carrion to eat.
