A friend runs what was a very successful bar says that some nights he sells one large beer! Restaurants have closed, never to return, like le Spice and until there are large numbers of international tourists the situation will remain dire. Thai people simply don't visit these areas and the proposed reopening of the Night Market on August 1st will not improve foot traffic in the area. You are witnessing the not so slow and deliberate strangulation of the mass tourism industry and the attempted repositioning of Thailand as a more "quality" tourism market. I walked through at a couple of different times about a year ago; it was pretty much downhill then..... Didn't see one lady I would have liked to touch - let alone touch me.....Looked like all the young/unjaded/healthy looking & pretty ones had moved away, to someplace else..... I can honestly say there were perhaps 2 that were okay but most looked to below a 5 on a 1-10 scale. Maybe in a dark setting with a good buzz on (aka Beer Goggles) they'd look a little better.
