Pattaya: Sign of the times - desperate squatters move into resort's shuttered bars and pubs

Thai media Manager went to Pattaya and found desperate unemployed people squatting in the city's closed pubs and bars. 

 

Ten were in one bar area in Soi Bua Khao in central Pattaya - the once thriving red light area is now a shadow of its former self with no tourists to speak of. 

 

Both men and women are sleeping in the bars by night then by day they seek handouts of food and try to get odd jobs so they can survive.

One man said he'd been out of work for 4 months and had nothing - not even the bus fare to go home. 

 

A bar operator said they were tolerating the squatters as these were desperate times. There were a few drug takers among their number but they were not seeking to have them evicted as the bars were shut down.

More racism. Bangkok and Phuket had way more than Chonburi and the overwhelming majority were not foreigners. Even in Chonburi, the amount of foreigners was a handful, yet here it is made out as if we alone were totally responsible. I remember that when many were calling for the borders to be closed, it was the government that kept them open long enough for the virus to get in.

It is also the same government continuing to make things so difficult for businesses to operate, that so many of these people are still out of work, with no help coming from those in power.

most Thais will adapt or already have, there are many other types of work out there that don't rely on selling booze to foreigners..

The government seems to have a done real number on western tourists with their constant finger pointing and lies, I hope western tourists never set foot here for a long time

Of course in reality, all of this originates back to China aka Chinese foreigners...  But I'm sure we won't be reminded of that fact by the current Thai government...

Totally agree, all those international companies in Chonburi area should read this and pack their things immediately.

Good bye to EEC and Thai economy, back to growing rice and eating insects.

I see no difference in your statement than what many other governments around the world have done and are still doing.

I have lived here (Chiang Mai) for many years and have put up with the regulations for us expats.

But now I totally agree with you. As the most cases are thais coming back home from several countries overseas.

Farangs spend money in bars and restaurants owned by local Thai people. Chinese visitors spend money in Chinese Thai owned businesses that's why the latter are welcome the richest Thai are the Chinese Thai.

With reference to the OP's write up where he refers to desperate unemployed people, it makes me wonder if people really want to work.  I have been trying to find a new gardener for nearly 6 months now, tried a couple out but they want the money but not the work. I pay the going rate, plus provide free accommodation, free water and power. They are not hassled and I am flexible when it comes to their personal requirements for time off, In 17 years of employing people I have never had a complaint, so with all this unemployment where are the people wanting a job?

I've seen ladies hanging out at closed bars and I think it is because many of her previous customers know her from that bar and she thinks they will come there to look  for her again.  I'm sure she is right.  Also, if you want to find customers you need to me out somewhere so someone has a chance to see you.  Not all the ladies do the online thing and many who do continue to work their online customers as they wait for customers at the closed bars.  It gives her 2 ways to find a customer.

Yup. Continue with the anti-foreigner rhetoric, why don't you, Thailand. The foreigners will stay away, and this will be the way of life for you lot (homeless living in deserted buildings, joblessness etc) for a long time to come. And not just in Pattaya. Good luck.

That is just rude and unacceptable. As I read in some posts above, the blame for the virus has to be put on the Chinese and the Chinese Government and no one else. The nerve of them saying foreigners in general. It will be us, the Western foreigners who will bail most of them out as the Chinese are directed to certain places to stay, eat and shop

Of course not, Chinese spend lots of money here. They are also responsible for COVID19 being spread across the world. Proof? Why did Wuhan ban domestic flights in Jan , but let international flights continue ?
