I'm still trying to find a reasonable insurance policy, hopefully short term (1 or 2 months).

 

Some other posters have shared insurance company names but on checking I've mostly found it's an annual policy only and/or the cost is enormous.  In my own case I have the Australian DVA Gold health card which covers 'all conditions' however I've called the DVA and the response is that they are still formulating a policy re Covid 19 and it will very likely not state a US$100,000 (or converted to another currency) minimum.  Having the DVA gold card is of course why I don't to take a full annual commercial policy. 

 

I called the Health ministry in Bkk and asked if I have a letter from DVA (which card holders can easily download) stating covers 'all conditions' would that be acceptable? The officer didn't know and said she would check and call back, she did revert an hour later 'no, cannot be accepted'. 

 

Hence, still looking for a policy. One other point that confuses me, re insurance, is comments that it has to be an insurance company on the list published by the Thai Health Ministry. But I can't find such list. Can anybody please give clear answers on this point.

Insurance has to be the duration of your stay. Can not be 1 or 2 months.

I was offered a repatriation flight from LHR to BKK (only £2500 business class available). I paid the Airline directly for the flight (bank transfer). ASQ secured (45,000 baht) Wife called around the various ASQ hotels. 

Covid-19 test taken 3 days before flight. Covid-19 Negative Certificate and Fit to Fly certificate issued less than 48 hrs after submitting the Covid-19 test (i.e. day before I flew).

 

Flight: London to Bangkok. Check-in was a slow process, we were told to get there 4 hrs before departure – Check-in counter opened 3 hrs before flight. Check-in staff made a detailed check of our documents, also asked us to download the AOT Airports App and register (track and trace?).

The flight was uneventful – I was surprised that beer and wine was served (business class anyway).

 

 

Arrival: Step by step.... 

-     Upon stepping off the aircraft on to the airbridge a throng of Immigration officers and Airline staff await (i.e. 30-40 people) – All with Signs and asking if we are ASQ (all foreigners are ASQ and a number of Thai’s who so choose). 

-     We identified ourselves and were checked off a list (Name / ASQ booking)

-     Rows of seats (all forward facing toward the terminal) were placed on the concourse (two rows each side of the travellators)

-     ASQ’s were told to sit (filling up the rear of the rows of seats), we waited about 10mins

-     All SQ’s (State Quarantinee’s / Thai’s) were directed down the travellators and filled up the rows of seats from the front. 

-     All ASQ’s had our documents individually checked and were given a yellow ASQ badge (piece of paper on a paper clip).

-     Once all the SQ’s were positioned and had filled up the rows of seats and there was no more ‘passenger traffic’ the ASQ’s were called up, followed an immigration officer down the travellator to the front. 

-     The ASQ’s were called through to a ‘desk’ where our temperature was checked and our papers checked once more and ASQ confirmed (at this stage the CoE was taken).

-     After this check the ASQ’s were individually directed to another row of seats (deeper into the terminal where the concourses meet concourse; crossroads so to speak).

-     While sat down we had our paperwork quickly checked.

-     In groups of 10 (in the order in which we’d sat down) we were called forwards to follow an Immigration Officer who led us down the travellator and up to the main Immigration Hall (the hall was empty, every booth was occupied by an immigration officer).

-     It took about 10mins to get through immigration – the officer seemed to be triple checking everything before stamping me in.

-     Once through into the baggage hall there were still lots of Airport staff and immigration officers.

-     Baggage arrived, we were guided through customs into arrivals hall and out through the doors to the outside where the hotel staff were awaiting in ‘pseudo hazmat suits and masks’, checked off our names and took us to awaiting vans. 

-     The vans had a glass partition between passenger and the Driver and ASQ Hotel Escort.

 

 

The ASQ Hotel:

-     Upon arrival to the hotel the bags were taken up to the room, I remained in the van while my temperature was checked.

 

-     I was then told I need to take a Covid-19 Test (at my cost ±5000 baht) because my existing Covid-19 test was older than 72 hrs (it was taken 72 hrs before departure but not 72 hrs before arrival – The ASQ booking questionnaire covered and stipulated that the Covid-19 test need to be taken 72 hrs before arrival, so I was kind of stuck without a choice) Note: the Test result came the following Day (i.e. Day 1 of Quarantine, arrival is considered Day 0)

-     I was then taken to the lift by a member of the Hotel Staff (who was also wearing a ‘pseudo hazmat suit and mask’) and told my room number. 

-     In the room there is an ‘instruction manual to read’ 

-     Instructions to log into the Line App.

-     We are given 3 sets of surgical scrubs (the hotel will not wash our clothes, only the surgical scrubs – we have to wash our own underwear – washing materials are provided)

-     Food is delivered 3x per day – I am messaged once the food has been placed at my door. 

-     Quality of food is ok, I’ve no complaints. Its mainly rice dishes, but that’s my choice – I could have had pork steak for dinner (each meal is one of 3 offered choices – we select what we want from a printed menu and inform the hotel via the line app the day before)

-     There was a 12 pack of water in the room, we can request more. 

-     There were snacks in the room, we can buy more. We can look online at 7-11, list what we want and the staff can go and get something for us (we have to leave money for the staff to do this *this is the only flaw in the otherwise water tight system)

-     We have to take our own temperature and inform the hotel staff via the line App at 10am and 8pm.

-     I am unable to leave the room until day 5 or 6 once the results of the first Covid-19 test are known to be negative (test taken on day 4 or 5).

-     After day 5 or 6 ‘some’ of the hotel facilities can be used (outdoor area and gym (with a booking) but not the pool).

-     After day 6 the room is cleaned every 2 days, we have to wait in a waiting area while the room is cleaned. 

-     Family can bring items under strict guidance – the items are checked before being given to us (no fresh food, no alcohol).

-     After 14 nights we are no longer considered Poisonous and are free to travel to our respective homes (by our own means). 

 

Arrived this  morning, I can confirm the same process with minor differences: 

 

Flight from Amsterdam to Bangkok (KLM), I was also told there were only seats in Business Class (1900€ which turned to be 1670€ at payment time), payment process was complicated, I had to book any business class one way tickty from amsterdam to bangkok through paris (cdg) (I guess for the tarficiation), the thai embassy in the netherlands managed the ticketing with KLM directly. Took a covid 19 test on wednesday morning, got the result thrusday end of morning and had to get to a doctor (lab wouldn't do) to do a fit to fly certificate, friday morning, packing all, then went to amsterdam (5hours with heavy traffic)

Flight was smooth, wine served as well 

Airport, exactly the same story, I would just add that everybody was nice and polite and helpful. 

ASQ: I didn't have to do another covid19 test, I did send them a copy of my covid test before leaving, and technically with the time difference, it was not yet 72h when I arrived in thailand... I asked the nurse she said I don't require one before day 3-5

For the rest instructions given were the same, service at 7-11 as well, but I checked through the hole in the door, they sprayed every single bill I left on the table using gloves before taking them: so no loophole there.

 

I don't understand the ban on alcohol? I have not been given one, but I haven't asked either? (I had a bottle that I bought in tax free, no one asked anything about it)

I received my Covid-19 test in about 40 hrs, so technically it would have been possible for me to receive the test on the same day as flight - thats cutting it close though.

Smart puppy’s !!! show’s they’ve been thinking of everything... (I’m going to have to order a packet of crisps from 7-11 now just to see if they do the same)

 

It would be amusing to see who can get them to order the most outrageous thing they can think of from 7-11. 

(yes - ASQ boredom is slipping in).

I think the booze ban is somewhat sanctimonious, its not really bothering me though. 

It would be interesting to know if your hotel staff will pick up a couple of beers for you !! (the staff here at TwoThree already preempted the question with a list of what they can’t pick up).

 

I still have a bottle of wine in the bag, I’d forgotten about it for the last few days. I might celebrate the ‘half way’ point with it !!!

Presume it is so you don't get wasted in your hotel room and try and force your way out.

 

It actually makes quite a lot of sense - avoid aggressive behaviour.

Check the Ts&Cs of the policy. Most policies can be cancelled part way for a refund. Pretty standard in insurance.

 

So just take a full year policy so you have no hassle, and once you're out of ASQ cancel the policy.

 

The cancellation policy won't be exactly as a percentage which is still to run - for example, after 1 month if you cancel you forfeit usually 15%, not 8% - but you can still get quite a lot back.

 

Did you say you are in Australia? Do you want the Australian ambassador in Bangkok's email? You can ask him to intervene and potentially assist.

A big thank you to Richard and everyone else for taking the time for sharing so much invaluable information with us. I hope that time flies for you all in quarantine. I smiled about the peeping hole story and the suggestion of starting a little competition. If I was in quarantine I might try ordering suncream from 7-11;-). Reminds me of when I went to 7-11 with my now wife and heard her ordering "foodlong sh*t". Was quite amused and puzzled and only later found out it was footlong cheese.

No offense but your experience sounds a lot better than others. Arranging the flight in particular sounds like it was a breeze and way cheaper then other countries.

 

Thanks for the report, very detailed, now I’m thinking of applying in Canada as well.

I guess it depends on the embassy but I don’t think they will issue a coe without a flight and most are still waiting for august schedule. Without a flight, it will be hard to know when to book your ASQ as well.

 

If you need a visa as well, you could get that sorted in advance.

A lot of people are hoping that the Emergency Decree will be lifted by October, of course, we have no idea and it may not be.

But, If so, commercial passenger flights will be permitted to land and the Certificate of Entry and necessity to liaise with a local Embassy / Consulate will not be a requirement.

 

At the moment anything that far ahead is too far ahead. 

 

I would assume that more will be known much closer to the time, i.e. beginning of September. 

 

 

A total and complete guess is that regular passenger flights are permitted to fly into Thailand again by September and Passengers are required to have a Covid-19 Test (negative) and Insurance covering Covid-19 (which will need to be checked at check-in and immigration upon arrival).

 

The UAE has reopened already, The Emirates announcement gives us an idea of how things may pan out for travel to Thailand.

Getting an ASQ room in the early days, even the cheapest ones, as in your case, wasn't much of a problem.

But the situation has drastically changed in the last few weeks when it became virtually impossible to find a spot at the less expensive hotels.

It seems the hotels are finally wising up and making it more difficult or impossible to make future reservation by people without a confirmed booking for a repat flight.

They also make it more difficult to get a refund.

Yes I am right now near Sydney, and yes can you please share the Australian Ambassadors e.mail address. But when you say intervene can you please share what your meaning (intervene on what aspect)?

Can you please expand what your meaning about booking flights direct with ANA. I'm guessing your meaning that you booked directly with ANA and you used this booking to replce a booking on the actual repat. flight. Would you please share. (I'm realizing to do this there must be commercial flights operating.)
