Popular Post webfact
Britain nears abandoning Brexit trade deal hope - The Telegraph FILE PHOTO: EU flag are placed on broken glass and British flag in this illustration picture taken January 31, 2020. REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/Illustration DOWNLOAD PICTURE (Reuters) - Britain and the European Union will fail to sign a post-Brexit trade deal, with only a few days left before Prime Minister Boris Johnson's July deadline, The Telegraph reported. The UK government's assumption is that there will not be a deal, though it remains possible that a "basic" agreement could be reached if the EU gives ground in the autumn, the newspaper said, citing government sources. The government expects it will trade with Europe on World Trade Organisation terms when the transition period ends, the report added. Britain left the EU on Jan. 31 and its relationship with the bloc is now governed by a transition arrangement that keeps previous rules in place while the two sides negotiate new terms. Negotiators remain deadlocked on fishing rights, the deal's governance, the European Court of Justice's role and so-called level playing field guarantees, the newspaper reported. Britain is pursuing trade deals with other countries and setting up its own sanctions regime, and has previously insisted it should not have to sign up to the bloc's standards. A spokesman for Johnson said on Monday Britain will continue to engage constructively with EU in talks on a future relationship, but that London is not willing to give up its rights as an independent state. Popular Post ukrules
Drastic changes are coming in the next 3-4 weeks. They won't know what hit them but they know it's coming, we left the EU many months ago. With no deal on the table there's a lot more leeway and we won't be playing ball with the French. For example, how many 1000's have washed up in boats since we left the EU? What will they do when we send them all back to France? 19 1 2

I doubt that UK Border Force people will still be based in France, border will effectively then be mid-Channel. Popular Post stephenterry
It probably doesn't matter one iota as this government, headed by a muppet, is capable of mismanaging everything from the Coronavirus, the NHS, the Care home deaths, their own backbenchers, Russian infiltration, and the economy - which will be funded by the taxpayer for decades after. It's a pity that Starmer won't be in Downing St until winning the 2024 election- or hopefully earlier if a no confidence vote is successful. As for fishing rights who'd want to risk their health by consuming polluted fish anyway? England - I'm sad to say is currently a waste of space... 21 6 1

The UK is no longer a part of the EU. They're crossing a frontier when leaving France illegally and they're all going to be sent back and it's going to start happening pretty soon. I also read somewhere that there's a very good chance this can be back dated to the date the UK left the EU, think about that. It's the Schengen border. It's ECHR that stops the UK from extraditing, with the ECJ having the final say. People always say that these things (ECHR) have nothing to do with the EU, but a country has to be a signatory to it to be a member of the EU. Popular Post Rookiescot
So the Brexit utopia awaits. Its been obvious for months this was going to happen. Johnson and the Brexiteers made too many promises they simply cannot keep. May went to the EU and got the best deal the UK was going to get. It was still rubbish because leaving is a stupid idea but according to the Brexiteers it was not leaving at all. It was selling out. Then Johnson starts claiming we can have all the good stuff from the EU with none of the perceived (in their eyes) drawbacks of being a member. They need us more than we need them. The EU is having none of it. Congratulations Brexiteers. You won. Now the country will have to deal with what it is you actually won. What happened to the oven ready deal? 17 1 2

I doubt that, it's all about where they're coming from. Arriving from France is very different to where they arrive from in the Med....where are they coming from? France being a bastion of liberty and freedom, etc, etc.....nobody's fleeing from danger in France. Once the talks of a deal end - then it's over and that's going to happen much quicker than people realise. Things will change straight away, there may be slight penalties but the UK can handle them and do whatever it wants. 3

Popular Post watso63
The EU is and always has been. The last four years has been a complete waste of time and money. The BREXIT referendum result should've sent a clear message to the establishment that we wanted out there and then, but no we've had four wasted years of whinging and whining by self interested corporate businesses, sell-out politician's aided and abetted by the lunatic, biased left wing media and we know better than you "celebrities". Just to reinforce this the Liebour Party and the non democratic Liberal Democrat Party were hammered in the recent General Election. The Scot's had their once in a lifetime referendum a few years back and voted to remain in the Union, but again Wee Burnie keeps harping on from the cheap seats whilst having her cake and eating it. The EU have just proved what a mess they're in with all the squabbling over the past few days. Time to just walk away. 5 1 1

The terms of how Brexit was to be achieved was not discussed until after the vote by either side. Perhaps both sides should have been more specific beforehand. But it was not considered important until after the result. If only we had had a series of further votes regarding the minutiae of the outcome.
