You're joking, of course!  No foreigner on Thaivisa ever does anything that contravenes the rules of whatever exercise they're involved in or contradicts any moral values connected to any subject, that is a fact, documented here daily by the personifications of perfection that interact on this forum

The woman is absolutely at fault. She should not have been in the road.... period. There is almost no way that the driver could have seen them. I have sometimes whacked stationary motor biles with my pick up when reversing because I can't see them. Release the driver, arrest the mother and declare her unfit to be a parent.

I hit someone because I didn't see them is even better than the old brake failure excuse. When you reverse into a stationary motorcycle, it's your fault right?

"The local police said that the driver clearly could not see behind him properly and was negligent."

Sure... but what next ? "should have a mirror"... a mirror ?

No, definitely not. Driver doesn't have to go backward on the road, much more with a pickup or a truck. In the labor area, worker trucks have special sound when go backward, it is not for nothing. And in my country,it is absolutely forbidden to go backward on the road.

You just go backward to park the car, and if it is a truck or a pickup you can not see on the back, someone move his ass and go to help on the back (even if raining or big sun... no way for lazy one).

And the life is first before to the car/pickup. Why did he run backward on the road ? to go where ? You forget to stop ? You make an other one turn... Or maybe you want to go closer because the turn is in 2 kilometers (as i see many times) ? Don't cut the road, don't go backward, don't go opposite side of the road (i see this many times ! everybody see that in Thailand, right ?)... just respect your own law should be enough to not kill someone so easily.

Same for the police, make respect the law, just this should be better for everybody.

And for drive card... looks like a joke, really... no one know to just park backward, but they go backward on the big road (out of logic, no reasonable, really stupid).

Drivers are ALWAYS at fault when they hit pedestrians while going the wrong way on a one-way street, perhaps especially when they're backing up with no rear view. It's not quantum physics.

Actually, it is quantum physics. Some atoms definitely collided.

I know at least one. The farang fella that reversed into me while sitting on my stationary scooter.

Im from a different Generation. No Nanny State. I got hit by a Car twice because i was a dozey nit. Yer Mate drowned in a Rip, so was he by ignoring the warning signs. Now its blame every one but the  Adult Dick Head who stands on a Commercial Hi Way with an innocents life in their arms. How she gains any sympathy is beyond me. Unless Shes Mentally Retarded.

she fully expected the traffic to adhere to the basic rules,

one of which is to not drive in the opposite direction,

the traffic becomes corrupt the second anyone break these basic premises,

and then you have a situation where nothing is predictable in the slightest,

complete anarchy.

now you could say why, as someone that has lived here for 50 years would she ever take

basic adherence of traffic law for granted? and that is a valid question,

but fact is if he had adhere to traffic regulation she would have had zero reason to

watch out for dangers coming from left

yes but the motorbike isn't able, by itself, or dumb enough, to stand still in a road without looking what is coming at it from any direction.  The lady was an unaware dim wit, regardless of the actions of the truck driver.

If she always expects that traffic and drivers here will always adhere to the laws of the road, then she is dimmer than I first thought.

The carelessness of the Mother (?) is also a significant factor in this accident - the child is the only one here without any fault.

but you could also justifiably state that she focused on the most dangerous aspects here,

she was focusing on the child that is inherently unpredictable, and she was focusing

on the traffic flow that by all logic could only ever come from the right

yes, stationary in the road, not on the pavement. I find it very odd that many members on this post don't seem to understand that she was culpable. Of course the driver was inattentive and ignoring the rules (like that is unusual here), but if she had been more aware, as you must always be crossing any road, this would not have happened.  Actually of course, she wasn't crossing the road, she was standing stock still on it.  I still find that unbelievably stupid. Surely the woman knows that motorbikes routinely ride on the wrong side of the road, vehicles do it too.  Its a very common.

if you look closely, she was actually standing on the walk strip that traffic arent allowed onto

even if they travel in the allowed direction, she was apparently waiting for a gap

in the allowed traffic from the right to cross the road,

this is exactly what everyone would do

semantics. That is just splitting hairs and I'm sure you wouldn't do it.  I sure as hell wouldn't be that unaware of my surroundings.

Again, she is not on the 'sidewalk' as you call it.

again, she has one foot on the makeshift sidewalk,

and the other foot on the line vehicles arent allowed onto,

and the child is on the makeshift sidewalk altogether,

she followed her protocol to the letter,

while the driver otoh reversed on a one way street

and then doubled down on reversing on the sidewalk too,

for extra measure

Okay, we can agree to differ. In the West I would say that you are 100% correct in your assessment, here, not so much.  Any location near a road in Thailand you need to be aware, switched on to the many potential hazards  as they are  dangerous locations. I have seen many a cop on a motorbike going the wrong way down a road and school children do it regularly to 'stay safe' and avoid a U Turn. It's so common here as to elicit no comment whatsoever.

LOL Your on the wrong forum dude, this is a Thai forum not Aussie road laws. As for one part of your post you are regarding reversing, you have the right to drive forward, you have the right to reverse backwards you have the right to reverse park, you have the right to drive in, you have the right to reverse out. As for road rules. road rules/laws can get you killed, using common sense Won't.

Hey dude who should be more alert around traffic? and who would be the one into the morgue?, the driver or the the pedestrian? "Hint" It won't be the person driving the car. You follow awareness and common sense and everyone will live longer.

Read the story again.  The police found the Truck at fault.

You are so lame going after someone personally when the story clearly says the it was the truck driver's fault.  How can an illiterate person know Thai Road laws so well?  Answer: You don't

I know that traffic doesn’t always come from the right. I also know that when walking down a pavement (sidewalk) that motorcycles ‘could’ come from behind.

Ultimately, when being a pedestrian in Thailand we need 360 vision, head on a swivel.

I hate walking down the pavement with my son for this reason and drive everywhere where possible.

Pedestrian safety in Thailand is atrocious as it is (as this video presents), while the driver of the truck is most definitely at fault.

With basic awareness of her surroundings this lady would not have been in a situation to get hit by an idiot in a pickup.

In Thailand, due mainly to the ridiculous u-turn system, many people drive the wrong way on the roads as it's the shortest route to the destination. It's something you see everyday here. If you aren't expecting it, you should not be driving here.

Amazing, the pickup was already reversing, the woman just steps out in the road without looking - and after getting hit, she grabs her child and runs in to the middle of the road with her back to any oncoming traffic.

Crazy country.

It's the "me first" culture in this country.
