Daily News continued their campaign to raise awareness of the disgraceful carnage that continues on the Thai roads.

And it is only getting worse.

So far this year 7,969 people have been killed at the scene of accidents.

This does not include the number that die in hospital or on the way there. Consequently the actual figure is much higher and is often claimed to be about 24,000 to 26,000 per year, notes Thaivisa.

With two days to go in July the number of dead at the scene stands at 1,014.

The worst day in July so far was on Wednesday with 76 casualties.

Statistics provided by an accident and drink driving awareness group shows that over the last few years matters are only getting worse.

As part of their warning to motorists on Thursday Daily News said that everyone should be careful at U-turns.

They published an horrific picture of a burnt out lady's motorcycle.

The rider had been killed after making a sudden turn on Pahonyothin Road in the Khok Samrong district of Lopburi in central Thailand.

This is the cause of some of the madness and I'm sure many on here will have experience of these .. it is quite ridiculous to pull across the direct flow of fast moving traffic to turn especially slow moving vehicles like trucks .. until they come up with a better idea there will always be fatalities at these U turns ..

maybe they should close the roads to motosays for a week

They'd rather take the idiot truck drivers and maniac mini van drivers off the road or at least confine them strictly to the left, with a speed block at 80 km/h max

Lockdown the country to keep covid19 deaths low (58) and destroy the economy and particularly the tourism industry and let 8,000 people die from road deaths. Obviously a sensible decision. In fact but for the emergency decree the road kill numbers would have been higher.

Are minimizing deaths by preventing the spread of the virus and minimizing deaths by fixing the driving issues mutually exclusive options?

If you apply the discipline that's needed to avoid covid19 to driver education and safety, then you can easily and dramatically lower your numbers of road fatalities.

Many people won't drive safely if they aren't educated to do so and/or made to do so by law.

Exactly!  Thailand has shown that it does have the ability to take on difficult issues.  Road deaths should get a lot more attention than they do.

Yes these U-turns are madness and a death sentence, the only really way to solve the problem is roundabouts, It might take some time for the Thais to understand how it works but it will save lives  slow and keep the traffic flowing at a steady pace.

It would be interesting to calculate the economic cost of traffic accidents over 1 year in Thailand. The powers that be probably don't care. The infamous, Intrinsically corrupt and lazy police are partly responsible for not enforcing the road laws on a continuous basis, especially when it comes to motorcyclists who ride their bikes like headless chickens.

Around here a lot of people ride untaxed motorbikes and I assume don't have a license to operate one on a public road. With this this sort of behaviour allowed to go unchecked of course nothing will change.  Same can be said for helmet wearing.   And lastly, today driving back from Muang Phitsanulok on Hwy 11 I commented to the wife on the spectacular stupidity of one motorcycle rider who cut across the road in front of us...and the wife agreed!  Thank goodness I have a camera...jist in case worse comes to worse.

Ps: I will admit to not wearing a helmet most of the time because there is no financial pain inflicted.  Last week we went down to Wang Phlong for lunch and 3 cops were there waiting for food and drinks.  Not only we turned up helmetless but so did everyone else!  Not a dam thing was said about it!

Roundabouts?  You have got to be joking. This crowd would never get it.

My area has a few and naturally they are always jammed as they require users to give way to other vehicles. It's biggest vehicle or most reckless approach that gets priority
