Popular Post webfact
Trump says federal government should again seek death penalty for Boston bomber Tsarnaev By Pete Schroeder FILE PHOTO: U.S. President Donald Trump speaks to a crowd of supporters, flanked by a line of local law enforcement, as he arrives at Tampa International Airport, in Tampa, Florida, U.S., July 31, 2020. REUTERS/Tom Brenner/File Photo WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Donald Trump said Sunday that the federal government should again seek the death penalty for Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev. In a tweet, Trump said the federal government must challenge a Friday appeals court decision overturning the death penalty for the 2013 attack. "Rarely has anybody deserved the death penalty more than the Boston Bomber, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev," tweeted Trump. "The Federal Government must again seek the Death Penalty in a do-over of that chapter of the original trial." A three-judge panel of the 1st U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals upheld much of Tsarnaev's conviction Friday but ordered a new trial over what sentence Tsarnaev should receive for the death penalty-eligible crimes he was convicted of. The federal governemnt is reviewing the ruling. Prosecutors could ask the full appeals court to reconsider or appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court. Tsarnaev and his older brother, Tamerlan, set off a pair of homemade pressure-cooker bombs near the finish line of the world-renowned race in 2013, tearing through the packed crowd, killing three people and wounding more than 260 others. Tsarnaev admitted to his crimes after his conviction in 2015, and apologized to the victims. Popular Post TopDeadSenter
And this is how you win votes. Trump is connecting and resonating with citizens interested in maintaining justice. I suspect most Americans, bar a tiny minority of extreme leftists, want the Boston bomber to get the death penalty. LAW AND ORDER! 6 3

LAW AND ORDER! Justice should be administered under the Rule of law, not by populist sentiment. Is one of the deceased victim's farther, who doesn't wish the death penalty to be imposed, an 'extreme leftist' or indeed anyone who is opposed to the death penalty - I think not - it's the reverse, 'extreme leftists' are, among other issues, those who support killing of opponents. You base your argument on one person! How about the other 200+ victims who do not agree with you and the society of 320 million who risk more harm if such terror is not deterred? 5 1

If a new trial for sentencing is held it should be fair.

However, no, it's not just 'one person', many are against the death penalty. Islamists are not deterred by the death sentence, nor has it been proven the death penalty is a deterrent to murder in the general population. Also: rape is not about sexuality it is about power! You can "perfectly" well rape a person without a penis!

gazza4
Reassuring to see Trump and the officers all wearing their masks. Maybe Trump should be facing a retrial. His victim count far exceeds that of Tsarnaev.

blazes
I think all the evidence over many decades suggests that capital punishment does not deter. But like George Bernard Shaw (and the Israeli government) there is a lot to be said for "an eye for an eye". You chose to disobey the law; now, here is the punishment for doing that. You have the freedom NOT to kill. We, the State, have the freedom to decide that you suffer the penalty that the state has determined is appropriate.

Popular Post TallGuyJohninBKK
Most countries in the world have abolished the death penalty. And the list of those that still kill those convicted of crimes is filled with a lot of not so enviable places: China, India, the United States, Indonesia, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nigeria, Ethiopia, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Iran, and among almost all Islamic countries, as well as Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, and Sri Lanka. Fifty-six countries retain capital punishment, 106 countries have completely abolished it de jure for all crimes, eight have abolished it for ordinary crimes (while maintaining it for special circumstances such as war crimes), and 28 are abolitionist in practice. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capital_punishment Edited August 3, 2020 by TallGuyJohninBKK

I misread the/your post I responded to. To correct myself and agree with you. I meant that it has been proved by many studies that the death penalty is NOT an effective deterrent to murder. Again, please excuse.
darksidedog
I think the biggest argument against the death penalty, regardless of the crime, and a point missed by every poster here so far, is the number of people who have been executed, with evidence subsequently appearing that exonerated them. Every 10,000 dogs that thoroughly deserved it, (this one included) are negated by the single innocent man, which could easily be you or me, wrongfully (but effectively) murdered. It's tough after all to say sorry to the dead you later realise you did the wrong thing by. Politicians should NEVER try to influence decisions by the judiciary. It is tantamount to interfering or attempting to pervert the course of justice. Lives and Justice should be more important than a few populist votes.
Cryingdick
Just let him rot and never speak of him again. There is no place for feelings of revenge, retribution or anger in a fair judicial system. Also some people have said things along the line of I have never seen an executed terrorist re-offend. Well when you martyr one you can make him a gift that keeps giving. I am also for humane treatment of prisoners regardless of the crime. Just because somebody does something hideous does not mean I need to become more similar to that person as a human being. I don't murder people and I don't torture them over decades.
