Bangkok: Seventy five tourists evacuated as sightseeing boat sinks in the Chao Praya

Quick thinking actions of a boat captain were hailed as helping to save the lives of 75 Thai and foreign tourists after a three story pleasure boat sank at a private pier on the Chao Praya river last night.

The "High Season 1" had earlier set sail from a hotel in the Rama 3 area further south.

When it reached the Phra Pokklao (Rama 7) bridge the captain realised something was amiss as it started to list.

He docked at a privately owned jetty nearby in the area of Soi Somdej Chao Praya.

A local official Jakree Sriraksa, 31, said that  the vessel was still afloat when he arrived and all passengers and crew were evacuated.

It appears to have sprung a leak on the right side though an investigation is underway. Pak Klong San police were on the scene.

Daily News said that the vessel is owned by High Season Resort on Koh Kud in Trat province in the east of Thailand.

Is boat surveyor a Thai only job?  It would seem that vacancies are not being filled.  Some of those gawd awful fishing boat skippers seem to be able to stay afloat for years.  Why do pleasure boats have some much trouble in Thailand?

Foreign tourists???

I suppose these were tourists who had been stranded in Thailand since March, and not recently arrived tourists, which would be impossible, at least officially...

Thailand. Where you can experience a boat sinking or have someone float your boat all in one night.

Talk is cheap!

Thai politicians need to pull their heads out and do their jobs.

You can always depend on a safe time in Thailand with the highest safety standards. How many life jackets on board?

Both of them.

Safe trusted Thailand just gearing up for the return of tourists.... they should change the name from the high season to the "killing fields"

it just gets better and better.

Ahh!! Boat sinking season, just in time for the hordes of Chinese they're thinking about letting in.  Can't make this up!!

Been a bad week for boats in Thailand, what with this sinking and the Samui ferry mishap the other day... But then again, EVERY week is probably a bad week for boats in Thailand, if you value your life.
