Minister denies Thailand ‘importing’ plastic waste

Industry Minister Suriya Juangroongruangkit on Monday (August 3) dismissed rumours that the Department of Industrial Works had agreed to import 650,000 tonnes of plastic scrap.

 

The minister said the rumour was untrue because since 2018, the department had not issued a licence for the import of scrap from foreign countries.

 

He also said that the Customs Department can send 1,702 containers, which some of them filled with illegal plastic products, back to where they came from.

It is also completely untrue that officials (both high and low) in the department, were, and are, simply being bribed to look the other way, and that such agreements are made well in advance, and that consequently the question of licences never even arises.

 

Shame on anyone who would spread such rumours.

True, there have been no licenses issued for the import of plastic waste. However, Customs has permission to send 1702 containers of illegally imported waste whence it came.

 

This indicates that at least 1702 containers of plastic waste have arrived that the importer had no license for. These are only the containers that Customs found and siezed. How many more have made it into the country, one asks.

Ha ha! This import is a fraction of the amount exported by Thailand via the major rivers and into the sea each day. No license required.
