Thailand Elite: initial arrival date

I'm still not sure when the 5 years starts. Say you apply and get accepted, but then things change and you can't actually travel to Thailand for say 9 months, what happens ?  Have you lost that time ? It seems that you would. The membership starts on day of approval and issuance of the membership card doesn't it ?

The membership starts a couple of days after you pay, not when the application is approved.

The murky area is if you get a 5 year visa inserted say 9 months after your 5 year membership was paid for and activated.

Technically the last 9 months of your 5 year visa would not be valid - I've seen that used as the basis for some arguments with some consequences which include potential overstays and fines.

There's not much information or clarification on this subject though as people tend to get the visa inserted inside a relatively short period of time after joining....something to bear in mind if there is an extended delay.

You may of course be able to get the 6 month membership extension offered to existing members but that would require talking to them directly and letting them know individual circumstances. They seem to be pretty reasonable about things at TE.

They say until September 30th you can set your activation date. Of course it is unlikely we will be in Thailand by then because of delays with the repatriation flight etc.

But with payments until then we get 6 months extra. So if we manage to get in by March, we do not lose anything yet.

Thanks, so at the moment the is some flexibility around setting the activation date and the availability of an extension. But normally the rule of thumb then is don't apply too early and be ready to travel as soon as it is paid for and activated.
