Thai police are investigating an incident in which 18 Chinese men sneak across the Mekong River by boat.

They were found sitting and waiting at the "Thai Kitchen" restaurant on the Thai side from Laos.

None of the men had passports and they reportedly told investigators they hadn't brought them. They all had their luggage with them.

An official told 77khaoded that all borders remained closed and that people were trying to enter Thailand from the Golden Triangle economic zone in Laos.

They will all be deported,

Locals fear the transmission of coronavirus from such events though none of the detainees had a fever and all were wearing masks.

A very empty area (Thai Kitchen)  A lot of Long Tail boats a few kilometers to the North at the Golden Triangle.  The Long Tails ferry tourists across the MaeKong to the Lao trading market. No visa required.  Between the Thai Kitchen and the Golden Triangle on the Lao side are the Chinese/Lao Casino's

who knows how long this is going on

30+ years ago, my GF's father used thai border to sneak back to laos for a holiday

he was a laos refugee, in my home country, run away from war, you know

my home country has many of those refugees, owning houses and land and getting social security or unemployment money, year long, to go on holidays

Some tell me in the dry season the Mekong is dry enough in places to walk across because of the China dams upstream holding the water back.

In fact, this is the whole point of these dams: to prepare the land for an invasion on foot!

Yes indeed, I know the area very well. I used to stand by the large reception building on the Thai side of the Mekong and watch the gamblers cross on the ferries to the Laos "Chinese Las Vegas" complex opposite. As you quite rightly stated - no visas necessary! I do not know about nowadays, but one could cross on a small boat from the Golden Triangle Resort in Thailand to the large casino/hotel across the border river into Burma which was built alongside the Mekong. No visa necessary. One copied passport "photo page", handed passport to small riverside Thai Immigration office for "safe keeping" and a small fee, sailed across to Burma, showed passport copy to hotel/casino member of staff and then taken by lorry taxi to the casino itself. On return to Thailand one collected passport from Immigration. No stamps whatsoever in the passport.

And that's how the virus will return.

And with the present situation in China with Covid, Drought, Massive Flooding, there will be more and more Chinese trying to flee their Country.

And yes I agree with you, this is how the Virus ( and anything new ) will spread around SEA.

crossing during a pandemic into a locked down country. Bang them all up, they don't care about the saftey of anyone. Its not because they are Chinese, I would have said the same thing about any other nationality.

Yep, they all know they will get deported if caught, so its take the chance, no jail time, however send out a message clear as daylight, 10 years in BKK Hilton and they might not come.

There are more chances of catching the virus from Americans than Chinese.

Chinese have the virus well under controlled, as for America, look at who is the top ranked country with the most virus.

The number of Chinese visitors to Thailand in Jan to Mar this year well exceeded any other country.

For American's to get to Thailand, they will have a bloody long swim over the pacific ocean.

For the Chinese you can walk into Laos, and then take a small dingy to cross into Thailand. Thailand themselves admit this is the biggest risk to their covid free status.
