Officials ordered that Raja Ferry’s boat Raja 1 be suspended from service as of Thursday (August 6) because it was seen to be dipping to the left while at sea.

This boat normally transports people and cargo between a pier in Don Sak district and Koh Samui.

On the night of August 1, a boat owned by the same company sank due to strong winds some five nautical miles from Koh Samui pier. The boat was carrying three large garbage trucks, one four-wheeler and had 12 crew members and four passengers and reportedly san between Koh Si and Koh Ha islands.

On Thursday, a woman’s body was found on the sunken boat. This is the first of the three missing people to be found and has been identified as crew member Parada Chanhan. The corpse is yet to be retrieved.

Listing to Port a bit in the picture. However, I would assume these vessels have trim tanks to compensate for when sailing empty or fully laden with vehicles. This ferry appears to have more superstructure to port, so should be trimmed when unladen. It is another matter if the crew actually know if there are such tanks, or how to use them, or they probably simply cannot be bothered.

Trim Tanks ?

If there is anything at all, it will probably be a couple of water bottles hanging over the side.

Interesting news on a Thai Facebook page. This ferry apparently was kept in service by Raja despite the order to stop using it, and last night on a run from Donsak to Koh Phanghan it broke down near Samui, where it floated aimlessly for 5 hours. Another Raja ferry was sent to tow it into port, where it arrived 9.5 hours after leaving Donsak. At least it didn’t sink ????
