Bubonic Plague

I just read a report. It seems China has closed down part of Mongolia as there has been 2 Bubonic plague cases, one dead and one alive, so 50/50. The previous Bubonic plague killed over 200 million people, should we be worried?.

Fortunately the plague seems still be easily treated with antibiotics.

Yes, crossing the street is more dangerous if you use statistic to calculate.

If the virus is not air borne it is not that dangerous.

It is actually a bacteria. Otherwise, antibiotics would be of no assistance. According to the article, 16% of those infected still die, even with treatment. That is much worse than COVID-19.

Don't be so dismissive as to the potential for death. Yersinia pestis is now resistant to  antibiotics and some African strains are now resistant. There are multiple outbreaks around the world which the WHO has been able to contain. Recent epidemics were in  Africa (Congo and Madagascar).  The problem with bubonic plague is that  the bacteria easily mutates and the vehicle of change is that the fleas which carry the  bacteria come into contact with other  bacteria that are  antibiotic resistant. 

 

Remember that  there are two versions of the plague; 

The first is the respiratory version; pneumonic plague and is 100% fatal. No one survives if untreated. No one.

The second is the common version we are more likely to  see reported: The swollen lymph nodes and the ghastly rotting of the flesh. It has about a 50% chance of death.

 

The  second variant   might be ignored by some of our TVF members who do not have good hygiene as they may find it indistinguishable from their normal state.

Most of those with a weakened immune system susceptible to bubonic plague have already caught and died from Covid-19. It takes a pandemic to stop a pandemic.
