Tourism revenue could plummet over 75 per cent

PORT LOUIS (Reuters) - Fuel spilling from a Japanese bulk carrier that ran aground on a reef in Mauritius two weeks ago is creating an ecological disaster, endangering corals, fish and other marine life around the Indian Ocean island, officials and environmentalists say.

NACC may question Ground Water Resources Dept. head about alleged graft

Thailand’s National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) may invite the Director-General of the Ground Water Resources Department to provide more information about his allegation that some members of the House budget scrutiny sub-committee demanded kickbacks, in exchange for the approval of his department’s budget.

Seeing the red flags flying on the beach at Koh Samet this week – and translating several stories about yet more capsizes in the nation’s seas and rivers – Rooster was reminded about a remarkable event in the 1980s that I remember to this day. Not least because it was one of the times this columnist came closest to going up in smoke inside a temple chimney.
